But seriously, I think January Jones does a fabulous job as Betty. Betty is a mess of (most of the time) repressed emotions and the way that Jones lets glimpses of the pain and frustration and sadness and bitterness and emptiness flit across her face or seep through into little piece of business is pretty awesome.

I haven't really been following this because, well, ugh. Ever since Sommers started his insane mutterings about how the nation NEEDS "Hey Hey" back, I've been living in a perpetual state of ugh. "Hey Hey" was never the good timey wholesome pure hearted beacon of family entertainment that Sommers has retrospectively been trying to cast it as. It was crude, racist, sexist and homophobic 20 years ago and I guess nothing much has changed. I'm guessing because nothing could entice me to actually watch either of the specials. But anyway, where is the baying for blood a la the furore over The Chaser's Make a Realistic Wish sketch? Is this the lesson we are actually taking away from this? Black humour doesn't fly but blackface does? Oh man, I fear for the fate of Saffran's new show.

Totally concur. He was born ready (to be my favourite). Although, I do love how Andy is getting to develop into this Creed from The Office off the wall type with genius throwaway lines like having a rock fight with a crazy guy who was running 20 minutes late.

Alan Sepinwall (I like to whore around all the best Mad Men recaps) thinks that Dennis' snub is because after stepping out of the waiting room (also, love all the liminal places - physical and metaphorical used in this episode) and into real life, he realises that he can't/won't live up to the promise he made to be a better man. I think it's a little bit more than that. I think that what passed between them is that thing that sometimes happens when you are with strangers. Being with someone that knows zero about you and you will most likely never ever see again can be incredibly liberating and let you be completely open and honest like you can't necessarily be with your nearest and dearest. I think seeing Don again when he never thought he would embarrasses Dennis. Not necessarily because he thinks he can't live up to his words but because it reminds him of his earnestness which can be totally confronting and a little mortifying.

You know, I'm not convinced that Betty squashed the caterpillar. She smirks as she closes her hand around the little grub but (unless it was just my shitty download) it's not clear that she squishes the thing. SCHROEDINGER'S CATERPILLAR! I love that ambiguity because it lets you unpack from the scene everything that you wrote but also if she DOESN'T squash the catepillar but is just cocooning it then that also plays well against the fact that she is about the give birth to a new life/phase in her own life. Anyway, fan girl enthusiasm seconded. I really feel like the season stepped up a notch with this episode.
