On Videogum

Gabe, if you can't learn to just sit back and enjoy a mindless action movie, I'm going to stop downloading your blog.

I don't buy the western-patriarchy thing. Comics have always made it their business to ridicule the upper social ranks. Monty Python specialized in making the nobility look like asses. And Eddie Murphy in whiteface (in the SNL sketch "White LIke Me") was way funnier than any blackface bit could ever hope to be. But I think maybe it's harder to make a woman look/sound like a man than vice versa. The really big female drag roles over the years--Barbra in Yentl, Julie Andrews in Victor Victoria--have required a huge suspension of disbelief (and they weren't even supposed to be funny). But that said, Tracy Ullman and Lily Tomlin have both done great drag.
