On Stereogum

Top 3 are good although I might put Slint #1 for importance and influence. Also Rusty by Rodan should be there. Agreed that the absence of Modest Mouse, Lovless and Dinosaur Jr. is bullshit. It shouldn't be an either/or between DJr and Sebadoh. Also Bubble & Scrape is more important that Bakesale. You can see the roots of so much indie rock going through Slint, Fugazi, Pixies, Rodan (I think although they could be seen as a result of Slint), Palace Bros more than Bonnie Billy, Pavement, Built to Spill and Modest Mouse. I like the idea of the list but obviously Amazon can't be trusted to do a well researched and honest list.

OK so you are absolutely right. Spot on analysis of the shy writer type looking for a girl to rescue them from their own shyness and be beautiful/unique/outgoing etc etc. Makes you sick right?

Unfortunately every once in a long long while it actually happens. It's just happened to me. Also unfortunately it almost never works. So I could bear this movie if Summer breezily flits off and leaves the dude crying all into his moleskine making the ink run.

Amrit wins understatement of the year for "Chairlift's Knife-inspired dance cut "

It's pretty pathetic how much they're copying the boy/girl vocal of The Knife. Nobody owns the cheapo synth sound but still. Arse!

btw - The dude repeating the silly chorus takes the crown for dumbest vocal away from that guy in Sugercubes. Yes I am old.

OK so Super Jail is pretty cool. But that has nothing to do with WK. Personally I don't really get into his schtick but it's really hard to get mad at a guy who's whole deal is being goofy and happy and liking people. The "party dude" thing is ironic you nitwits! He's not trying to be cool. He is intentionally being the complete opposite of cool. I can't stand to listen to his music but good for him for making happiness his job. We should all be so lucky.

Dan Deacon looks like he smells funny though. Fuck that guy. Haahhaaa!!

Not bad. I'm not much of a fan of oM but the song is a good one. The bass player was doing some really interesting stuff but the electro-assbaggery was getting in the way and you couldn't hear he was doing. Ditto on the guitars. I don't mind electronics but this was like a bad sound board job with one thing drowning out the rest.

I agree that AC is over rated and I like them. I enjoy their stuff but I really don't think it deserves "best of 09" posts even as a joke. Again I like them and think they do creative stuff but it's only good not great. As for live shows I don't know. I saw 'em at Southstreet Seaport a while back and it was great for about 30 minutes then it was like "enough already!" That show at least was like really good karaoke but that's about it. Looks like they're playing some instruments again now though so maybe it's cool. I'd like some live drums though.

There's no reason a reunion with Pavement could not be good. They were still doing really interesting stuff at the end. I like Terror Twilight a whole bunch. Also for me Pavement is the one band from the 90s real indie-rock scene that holds up the best over time. Back then I was more into Sebadoh, Fugazi, Superchunk etc (for whom I still have much love) but Pavement is still on my usual rotation.

Plus for some reason it seems like this would be less of a Second Mortgage Tour than a "Hey fuck it let's play some shows and see if we come up with new stuff" kind of thing.

You just made me blow a snot bubble in the damn cafe! Good point,

I haven't seen Milk yet 'cause I live in Czech Republic and we don't get those types of movies here but I've heard Penn does a good job. But anyway so only Gay actors can play Gay people?

I know there's plenty gay actors to chose from but why not get the best actors? Penn's politics are laughable (who can really think Castro and Chavez are good?) but there's no doubt he's a top actor working these days. Charles Nelson Riley would have played it much ahem "straighter."

Apparently David Milk originally wanted to do a series on ancient Rome but HBO already had the awesome series in the works. But don't beat yourself up I wouldn't be surprised if Milk knew about the novel and could easily have gotten some ideas from it. But he's such a self important arrogant dick that he went his own way. Proof that you don't have to be a super cool nice guy to make incredibly cool art. . . or tv shows.

Also Blood Meridian is awesome and I wish someone would make the damn movie already. Hell, since I'm not tied to reality let's make it NC-17 to do all the horribleness (aka awesomeness) justice. Ridley Scott wanted to do it and I think also Tommie Lee Jones. I'd prefer Clint Eastwood or the Coens but hey that'll probably never happen.

I agree. David Cross and Patton Oswalt are two of my favorite comics but sometimes they forgot to tell jokes and just went off on G.W. Bush. Cross was worse than Oswalt. I don't care that peple hate Bush. I understand it. He's not my favorite. But if you're going to trash him in a comedy bit, at least put in some effort and make a good joke. Will Ferrell's Bush cracks me up to no end.

So there is a big difference between what comics like Cross et al do and what Dunham does. First puppets can be funny, just not with jack ass ventriloquists. But just saying hateful things is not funny unless you take an angle on it to comment on how it is hateful and horrible. i.e. David Cross going off on the word "nigger" and why he hates all the "N-word" dodging that people do. He gets some shock value but that is not the point of the joke and it (the shock) serves the point that people are hypocritical and way too uptight about things. Or whatever. . .

Try being from Alabama living in NYC. Not saying Texans don't have a beef too or that we've got it worse. But the only things yankees know about my home state is Sweet Home Alabama and racism. So many times people would be shocked I was from Alabama because I wasn't a knuckle dragging xenophobic, racist, gay-basher. We Are Not Like That!!!!! The only thing worse than that were other Alabama ex-pats that trashed our home and played into the stereotype with their "I'm so glad I got out of there" shit.

Of course there's reasons we leave. Some of us want to see the world a bit more, but it is still a lovely place to live.

Also ventriloquists, mimes and jugglers are NEVER EVER funny!!!

Exactly!! There's something for everybody in this idea. Leftist dems get to sock it to the big bad insurance companies, conservative free-marketers can support more competition AND oppose big time deficit spending. As a right leaning hater of the GOP myself it would even be good for Dems to call the GOP on their bluff if they (GOP) are in fact in the pocket of the insurance industry as they (Dems) claim.

But the idea that a gov't run company will be efficient and force others to "get into shape" is laughable. Doctors won't take Medicaid because they lose money and waste time on paperwork that cuts by half the time they can see patients. The Post Office needs a bigger and bigger bailout every year. And Medicare is bleeding money and will be bankrupt in a few years. How would you like your insurance to be run like the DMV?

I don't know I think Baldy McTatoo has a point. That is some punk ass shit sneaking up behind a guy to throw a full nelson on him. Haven't any of those assholes seen a cowboy movie? It is the lowest low-down yellow bellied (or shirted) dishonorable way to confront someone. You NEVER shoot a man in the back unless yer a coward. So maybe cuz I watched on mute it's not as obnoxious that McTattoo yelled it so many times. But yellow belly should have come at him from the front and told Baldy to "chill out or I'm gonna wrastle yer ass to the ground."

I saw it with my Mom which I was a little embarrassed about going in but turns out was probably the best way I could have seen it other than with my 7 and 11 year old nephews plus my Mom. Anyway, it was a real as any movie I've seen in it's portrayal of Max. That is what kids are like.

My Mom probably liked it better than I did. She raised 4 boys and she had pretty much all of that stuff happen to or in front of her. None of us had the guts to try and bite her though. But Max is totally believable. I'd like to see it again, it really does seem to get better as I go through all the different elements. I think my Mom really appreciated it because she got to relive the childhoods of my brothers and me. She also struggled with trying to figure out how to raise us on her own and felt overwhelmed with trying to balance making herself happy and trying to figure out how to teach us to be men.

In a lot of ways this movie was "What It's Like to Be a Boy Without A Dad Around" but maybe that's just because of my childhood was like. I am sure girls have plenty to dig into also. My friend took her 3 yr old daughter who loved everything But the dirt clod fight. That sounds about right to me. That was pretty much every game of WAR or (I apologize in advance, it was a stupider time in many ways) Smear The Queer. It's all fun and games till someone gets hurt, and they always get hurt. Usually we called him a sissy and rode our bikes to another creek or bamboo patch. Kids are mean and stupid . . . and awesome sometimes too.

I have also have a feeling there will be many outbreaks of adults acting like children in the next few weeks. I admit I spent a good chunk of my weekend running around in the woods with a stick whacking spider webs, chasing wild turkeys and playing with fire.

I have to say, other countries just don't understand how this plays with Americans. I would think Australians would be a little more aware since they have the whole thing with their aboriginal folks but hey.

When I lived in Czech Republic I saw a guy in black face singing as Louis Armstrong in the main square in the middle of town for a big international folk festival. I was mortified and started looking around for black people getting ready to riot. But there aren't any black people in Czech Republic. They don't mean anything by it and they don't see what the big deal is. My friends thought I was being weird when I kept saying how wrong it was.

The irony is hilarious, Gabe. You are using the same arguments the Bible thumpers in my home state of Alabama used to defeat the lottery. Haha!! Not that you don't make good points. That is a very persuasive argument.

However, not every lottery is equal. In Georgia they actually did put most of the money toward education. If you can keep a 3.0 and are a GA resident you are exempt from tuition. Even in the first year of implentation students were getting help. My girlfriend at the time was able to return her student loans in her first year when the lottery paid half her tuition. As to elementary through high school I don't know if any money goes there or not.

Your moral arguments still hold but at least one lottery has turned out to do what it was supposed to. Anyway, well done for make a principled argument that isn't a knee-jerk lefty pose. (That is not sarcasm I promise)
