On Stereogum

I like it a lot because I just do. It's not perfect, but it's something new. And in a world of Williamsburg white-boys ripping off Talking Heads, that has a tendency to set an album apart.

Well, that's good to know...he's much better at making disenfranchised, lower-class voters that the Grand Old Party has their back. Though knowing that much about Toby Keith has never really been a life-goal of mine.

Now that Toby Keith has come out as an Obama-supporting Democrat, the GOP needs a new country-music figurehead.

As pointed out above, film was a central theme of his work. I was very interested in seeing his response to the process of adaptation. He excelled at first-person narrative essays, and this would have given him fodder for marrying his interest in film (see the US Premiere piece on David Lynch) with his life experience. Also, I guess I'd hoped the movie, as an external process, would drag him out of his dark place.

I cared that the film existed...I didn't necessarily care to see it.

That's not gibberish. Locke clearly says "Ham. I win." Which means two things:
1. It's a game and, of course, Locke wins. The island has always wanted Locke to win, but it had to pretend like the game wasn't fixed, which it totally was because you don't see anybody else walking away from their wheelchairs now do you? But the island knows how to maintain the simulacra of fairness, that's what it's all about, like, "whoop, you can walk, how about that?" or "whoop, you just got disemboweled by a smoke monster, that's tough."

and

2. The prize is cured pork.

Both discs of my "Stella: Season One" have been played and overplayed to the point of near-ruin...just kidding, that doesn't happen, but if they were VHS tapes, they'd be just a plastic casing filled with magnetic dust. But what I'm saying is, the TV show was and is still my favorite...I love and obsess over every minute of it.

"I love the '80s". Ha! So self-referential!
