Facetaco, if I remember my Latin teacher right (and I probably don’t), there’s actually an authority set up in the Vatican which maintains Latin as a language and creates new words in Latin in order to keep it up to date. Admittedly, I don’t know if you’d count clergy in the Vatican as native Latin speakers, but the Vatican does have three ATMS that operate in Latin. Make of that what you will.

It’s really bad working in retail, because both customers and your supervisor would tell you to smile, and give you shit about your attitude if you didn’t. Admittedly, this is pretty helpful in retail, but I have not once seen anyone tell one of the guys I work with to smile, for any reason.

Like, they were all given a template, and they then had to use their own materials to make a form-flattering, short but not too short dress all of their own. So the beginning of this trailer made me think, “Conspiracies? I love conspiracies! This could be worth it.”

And then Michael Bay’s name showed up, and I realized I was better off working my way through the X-Files.

badideajeans, I really am liking all the things you say. I just kind of take issue with the idea that calling people out makes them stop, but I think that’s largely from personal experiences. When my sister was in first grade, a supposed friend of hers had another friend hold my five-year-old sister’s hands behind her back, while this girl punched her in the stomach repeatedly. And they stayed “friends” for years. I think sometimes the problem is definitely when it comes from supposed friends, and victims think they can’t say anything because it’s just their friends, and that whole mindset can be clearly seen played into adulthood (Harlan Ellison and Connie Willis being a prime example).

I think there is a certain degree of nostalgia to a lot of the love for it, but I don’t think that makes it invalid. I got the first three books slightly in advance of my sixth birthday. I loved them — loved them — more than anything else that had existed in my life up to that point, pretty much. Now, I recognize that JK Rowling is not a particularly good writer! But it’s still something that’s been in my life for this long, and that’s affected and changed me in a lot of ways, and thus it continues to have value for me. When the last movie comes out, it will have been almost twelve years since I first got the books. Twelve years. The only things that have been part of my life for longer than that are my family and Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals. I’ve never even lived anywhere longer than five years. So yeah, the movies are often pretty terrible, and I can understand you not liking them! I will forever resent Emma Watson’s eyebrows and their regular placement in these movies. But those of us who do love them tend to have good reason, even when they’re less than quality.

So now I’m going to go watch that fanvid to We’re Marching On and cry some more. /nerd

This is everything I wanted to say and couldn’t really say. People say children are terrible, and they are! They’re terrible! But why are we continuing to endorse the fact that they can be awful by saying they’ll grow out of it, instead of trying to make them better people now?
