That’s really not the ending I was expecting to that wedding story! But glad to hear it. Did you go with the reading the groom picked out?

yes and yes. That’s a pretty great podcast and especially good when smart/interesting/funny guests are on it (which to be fair I think is most of them).

Those are some scary stories and I am really sorry to all involved. Boo, epilepsy!

But in the Honolulu flight scenario, did somebody at least get to scream “IS THERE A DOCTOR ON BOARD?!?!?!”

“Twinkle Twinkly Little Star” made me laugh a lot for no apparent reason.

Better now that you brightened it, Videogum.

What is Catfishing and how come you are both using that term so casually?? Is that A Thing?

that’s the case for me — I definitely didn’t mean to mock saturnian.

haha, I definitely triple-taked on that sentence, too.

Haha, what? I have no idea why videogum would “cover” this story, but SINCE YOU ASKED!

Te’o was definitely in on it, right? The Deadspin article says he “talked to her on the phone” (and went to sleep with her on the other end in her hospital bed, very normal). Since there was no suggestion that the other guy had a real live girl pretending to be the girlfriend, I don’t understand how this would be possible unless Te’o was part of the fabrication.

THANK YOU all. The Second Amendment argument is the absolute fucking worst. If you haven’t read it, this Jill Lepore article does a fantastic job decimating it: http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2012/04/23/120423fa_fact_lepore

… Frank Lloyd Wrong is really hard to follow up, but I finished the last final of my first semester of my Ph.D. today. Which might be exciting, but I really kind of mailed it in all week. Oh well!

it includes the line “you don’t know a person like me / I could sell your songs to Nike”. genius!

mostly unrelated, but Dar Williams has a great song (at least I think it’s great) called “I Won’t Be Your Yoko Ono” that plays around with these misconceptions.

So glad to see the return of the taco face! (I am REALLY keeping perspective.)

+11Posted on Sep 13th, 2012 | re: Enough With The Bullying Stuff (64 comments)

Could part of the problem/disconnect here be the conflation of the two? I get the sense that sometimes people use the term “bullying,” which has more serious connotations, when they really mean “teasing,” and that other people take issue with someone trumping up the same adolescent bullshit that most of us go through and calling it “bullying” when it’s not. And I guess there’s no way of knowing what people really went through, so maybe it’s better to just be sensitive? But I can see where the temptation to assume that the girl on this stupid show is being hyperbolic comes from.
