Duh Aficionado Magazine: Holy Shit, Japanese Culture Is Insane!

thumbnail icon: Duh Aficionado Magazine: Holy Shit, Japanese Culture Is Insane!

I'm not talking about the insane endurance game shows or the vending machines that sell used schoolgirl panties. For one thing, those game shows would be mad popular over here, so we can cut it out with the tittering benignly-xenophobic exoticization of another culture just because it happened to think of amazing television first. And as far as those used schoolgirl panty dispensers, AT LEAST THEY ARE BEING HONEST. America created Two Girls One Cup, and also Goatse, so America can come down off of its ASHAMED HORSE.

That being said, Japanese culture is insane. Not more insane than any other culture. As the above paragraph attempts to prove, we all have our weird shit. But they are insane in the way that their idea of prime time television includes plenty of room for a man in blackface to come out and do his Louis Armstrong impersonation, complete with slapstick Benny Hill-syle acapela trumpet mouth sounds. You know, insane like how that would be/is insane.

(via MalePatternBadAss. Thanks for the tip, Ashley)

To be fair, most used schoolgirl panties that you buy in Japanese vending machines come with a complimentary guide on What Would Be The Most Racist Shit, so it's not really the dude's fault. Capitalism.

At first I gave the guy the benefit of the doubt, lik he probably didn't realize it was racist and that he really just liked Louis Armstrong. But then the trumpet gag really turned it into a minstrel show.

I am impressed and weirded out.
Impressed because that was one hell of a Louie Armstrong impression, confused because this was on a widely broadcast TV show. I mean, it;s not surprising that people do this shit and get away with it, but it's usually not put on prime time tv.

What sucks about Japan is they are so easily amused. They give you a standing ovation for knowing how to use chopsticks. I swear, if I could fart the national anthem I would be a millionaire.

It's not only in Japan that this carry on is considered family entertainment - there was an impersonation show on the BBC that did something similar...a redhaired suerpmarket worker transformed into....Lionel Richie :-/

You have to remember, blackface is only offensive in North America because of its immensely racist tradition here. The Japanese never had African slaves. The Japanese never had minstrel shows. It's not enough to say something's racist, you have to understand why something's racist.

Im brazillian, there are plenty of black people around here, no black face, minstrels or whatever and i find it pretty offensive. it is clearly refering to minstrel racist humor, no doubt. and hey, 2 girls 1 cup is brazillian and Im proud of it :) we can be sick too.

Thanks for that first paragraph, Gabe, because those things need to be said - particularly to certain hipsters who claim to be all globally aware n shit without realizing how deep American exceptionalism runs in their veins. Yup, it's insane that this clip would be entertaining to Japanese people. I personally don't like it at all. But I think (Obama notwithstanding) America and other western countries have set the racism curve. So...after shaking your head in shame at this, I suggest catching some insane endurance game shows on youtube or hulu. Denpa Shonen, Gaki, Tokyo Friend Park - now that's good watchin'!

I don't see how someone impersonating Louis Armstrong, and doing an INCREDIBLE JOB, is Racist. Is it because his face is painted black? So? Would it have been as effective if it wasn't? I'm really sick and tired of the people that throw around Racism so loosely.

"According to the Oxford English Dictionary, racism is a belief or ideology that all members of each racial group possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race, especially to distinguish it as being either superior or inferior to another racial group or racial groups."

Please just get over it and grow a sense of humor.

Indeed. Its not discriminatory in any way, in fact the act is imitation to the point of idolisation.

1) Japanese culture is much more insane than many other cultures.

2) Just because something has racial elements and offends your sensibilities does not make it racist.

3) Really, Japanese culture is fucked up.

Here's why I don't think that's racist.

- He didn't mean any harm
- He obviously really likes Louis Armstrong to be that good at his impression
- I'm a girl. If a guy dresses as a girl, I wouldn't be offended.
- I'm overweight. When people wear fat suits, no one complains.

Either make it across-the-board or ignore it. I won't bitch about people making fun of fat people if everyone else stops bitching about blackface.

If you want to see some actual offensive blackface (and still, it was kind of innocent at the time), check out the Lincoln's Birthday scene in Holiday Inn with Bing Crosby. Some of the things the blonde girls says leading up to wearing blackface are horrible. "And here I imagined for weeks that I would look pretty tonight!" Wow.
