Being Honest About The Muppets "Bohemian Rhapsody" Thing

thumbnail icon: Being Honest About The Muppets "Bohemian Rhapsody" Thing

I made a mistake, OK? I saw this posted on almost every website yesterday, and it was sent in to tips@videogum.com by dozens of thoughtful and well-intentioned people, but I ignored it. There was just something about it that struck me the wrong way. I don't mean the actual video itself, I just mean the concept of the video. Whatever. Sometimes you're just not in the mood. But I am open enough to admit that I was wrong. Sometimes when things don't look good to you, it's a you problem, and not a problem with the thing itself. Because the Muppets covering "Bohemian Rhapsody" is really great. And it is really after the jump.

I am thankful for this video!

P.S. choke on it, Jeff Dunham.

W: Well, there were parts of it I liked!
S: Well, I liked alot of it.
W: Yeah, it was GOOD actually.

but Ga-buh, i'm not in the mood for this today-uh! Yes, it will probably make everything better, and rainbows will fall out of my tear ducts, but i'm kind of wallowing in the pre-holiday stress right now, y'know? Unhappiness is the fuel for my cleaning. I'll save it for tomorrow after i'm fat, happy and have time to sit.

this was sad. like, the song choice for one. and the fact that we have "wrong-sounding muppets." ugh. I just kept thinking about how Rowlf doesn't talk anymore.
--I'm such a downer.--
But what did they do to Miss Piggy's ears (too long, peeps) or Bunson's head (rounder, please)?? The end was nice. and i like these little youtube vids. keeps them in the public eye and such. I'm still glad I waited to watch it...now i can eat my cold turkey sandwitch and be depressed.
--they are only puppets. i'll be fine--
Of course if they wanted to be Hip they should cover Poker Face like South Park...or Bad Romance. (that would be awesome.)

Man, Zoot got screwed on the song choice; no sax parts in "Bohemian Rhapsody." I heard he was lobbying to cover Bowie's "Young Americans," but was prompt voted down. It's all politics behind the scenes at the Muppet Show.

Exactly. I felt like I knew what I was going to see before I watched it and thought, 5 minutes? I'll pass. And the more I saw people posting it I thought about lowest common denominators and got a bit of my disdain-train a'chuggin'. So, OK, I watched it. There were some nice surprises. The Fozzie-Waldorf-Statler exchange was worth it.

so, that was pretty great. this isn't new for the muppets or anything - they've been doing it since the seventies. but this sort of reminds me of where the wild things are, in that it appeals to children, but you have to be an adult to really understand and appreciate it, and that the creators have to find some way to balance the two audiences. with that said, i really appreciated animal's part in this. instead of describing this really horrific circumstance involving his mama, he regresses into what kids do in their infancy at the sound of their mama's name. it's, i don't know, precious.

You know that Michael Jackson video where everyone is all going, "Where the hell is Michael? He is late." (since they are all celebrities, they are on a first name basis with him) and then he descends with a camera crane, and it turns out that he was filming them all along? This was just like that video. Except less funny.
