You Be The Blog: The Life & Times Of Tim

Here at http://www.videogum.com, we spend most of the day cracking wise (so wise, we crack the wisest) about the state of pop culture and visual entertainment. It's our job to come up with snap judgments based on little to no information, and to use those snap judgments to over-enthusiastically applaud or unfairly deride the world's latest trampoline accidents and TV show trailers. But sometimes a project comes along about which it's very difficult to form a hyperbolic opinion. What then? Well, if you think it's so easy to blog all day (it's really, really easy), why don't you do it?

Here's the challenge. HBO has a new animated series premiering in September. It's called The Life & Times of Tim. Here's a clip:

See what I mean? It's like ... it's fine. I don't know. It could really go either way.

I just received an email about this show that informed me of some of the "funny" topics the show will be addressing. These include:

  • What happens when your girlfriend comes home before your hooker has left?
  • How do you convince the police you weren't really raped by a bum during a bachelor's party?
  • What do you do when a priest asks you to object to a wedding, as a prank?

I rate those topics Ugh, Maybe, and What? But there are a bunch of great shows that if you reduced their plotlines to single sentence descriptions I would probably throw you out of my office. BUT there are a bunch of terrible shows that if you reduced their plotlines to single sentence descriptions I would DEFINITELY throw you out of my office. So, like I said, this one could really go either way.

You make the blog, Fancy.

How about this:

HBO's new series, The Life & Times of Tim, is one of those shows that you kind of want to like because it's seemingly edgy and sort of funny. But then you watch a few clips which, even though they are taken totally out of context, make you feel like you've seen this show before. Because you have. It's like Dr. Katz meets It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Except it's drawn worse. And written worse. It's like a bunch of really mediocre animators and writers got together and made a show. While they were drunk. Or really stoned. Either way, you'll probably watch a couple of episodes and then be all, "Yep. I totally called it. Dr. Katz meets Sunny in Philadelphia. Except worse."

Meh. You're right. This is hard.

So, HBO has managed to combine the cutting edge Adult Swim technology of we-don't-give-a-shit-about-our-animation-that's-part-of-the-charm, and the cutting edge uncomfortable office humor of.. umm... The Office. In a new show called The Blah Blah Blah Of Something Or Other that stoners will love, but won't see because they're too busy tivoing (Yes, that's Tivo with an -ing suffix. Tt's word. Look it up in the Cecause I Said So Dictionary) that same re-run of Family Guy where death breaks his ankle.
Woops. It's OK HBO. Hey, how's that 7th season of Curb Your Enthusiasm coming along?

Why is this show animated? Because it wouldn't be funny without the shitty drawings?
