We Get It, FunnyOrDie, You're Famous I feel obligated to post a link to this fake PSA featuring Jon Hamm and Will Ferrell (among others), but what's the deal with FunnyOrDie these days? It's like a website about name-dropping. And name-dropping is the worst.

As long as they keep name dropping "Thomas Lennon In An Ascot" I'm pretty okay with it.

Oh man, black dude got mad indie/liberal street cred on this one? And Velma from the Scooby Doo movies? Irony? Politics? Stuff...?

Hmmm, pop-culture Rorschach test. I see Linda Cardellini and think "Lindsay from Freaks and Geeks."

I am disappointed in many of my favorite famous people for sarcastically dismissing and misrepresenting my point of view. I don't expect many people here to agree with me about this issue, and I'm certainly not in the mood for a debate, but I would prefer not to have my position treated with such disrespect.

You should pick a position that sucks less.

Uh, people on the other side of the argument done got compared to NAZIS. So, you know, you may not want to play the "disrespect" card.

Well, the people likening Obama to a Nazi were Larouchies, who are against the plan because it isn't single-payer. That certainly is not the opposing position that this ad is targeting. That said, I agree that disrespect is a bad thing regardless of its source. Hypocrisy is a bad look.

I have friends who do this constantly. They'll pipe in with a dissenting thought ("If you think about it, a lot of Obama's policies have roots in Socialist ideologies"), and when you try to discuss what they said, you get the "I don't want to get into a whole debate" move. It's infuriating. What's the point of starting a new topic if you don't want to discuss that fucking topic?
Sam, I respect your position (whatever it might be), and I know the Videogum comment section isn't an ideal place to get into a substantial discussion regarding the specifics of the health care bill, but doesn't it seem a little silly to demand that your position be treated with respect when you don't give one clue as to what your position is?

I didn't criticize anyone or any position. I never called anyone a socialist or anything else. I intentionally left my position vague so as to attempt to prevent instigating an argument about its merits. That said, the fake psa was dismissive of pretty much any position against a public option, so you can safely assume that I do not support a public option. Even if the fake-psa was in support of my particular position, I would still find it disrespectful.

Fair enough? What I still don't understand is why you wouldn't want to be in the position to defend your point of view. It seems kind of pointless to throw out some vague reference to your opinion (especially when the actual politics of the PSA had went undiscussed), and not expect people to respond. But if you don't want to talk about it, I'll respect that.

I'm just tired of the debate. My position was being mocked, and I wanted to defend it, but what is the point of rehashing the whole debate again?

I'm a pretty open-minded fellow, but it's unlikely that a discussion in this venue is going to change my mind. I also don't see how I'm going to make my case on a complex topic in short comment format. I am a student of economics, and the economics of this issue are complex. In a venue where I am vastly outnumbered and incapable of making real time responses, it reduces the argument to talking points or sarcasm. I don't mind sarcasm in all cases, but when it comes to real policy ideas, sarcasm damages the debate. Talking points are all fine and good when everyone is working from the same assumptions, but we are certainly not.

The reason I commented was that the fake psa, involving performers I really like, handled the issue with both sarcasm and talking points, and it used those tools to ridicule my stance. I was offended. I'm also a bit bothered that so many people here (not you, That One) are so keen to be just as dismissive of my position, without even really knowing what it is. I didn't downvote anyone in the RG vs BO debate for supporting government care. It doesn't surprise me, but it makes me a little sad.

What's the deal with Sam Lowry receiving these gut jerk down votes. He coherently albeit vaguely voiced an unpopular opinion. The comments were not inflammatory nor should they anger anybody. If we insist on discussing politics on a pop culture blog, which I guess we do, can we not at least be cool about it. This is exactly what Obama asked us not to do. I know in the grand scheme of things downvotes don't mean anything, it just pisses me off when anything conservative is automatically downvoted on this site. Its embarrassing to me.

Sorry, Carrie. But honestly, I'm not looking for an argument. I think there's room in Videogum to have the *occasional* semi-serious discussion as a change of pace from our usual fun-loving hijinks. I'm also deeply interested in what people with other points of view have to say about issues that affect us every day. Yeah, VG's not always the best place for this, but I have trouble filtering myself. Also, I feel like there are some really intelligent monsters here, and I value intelligent monster opinion.
So, here's an idea: if you guys want us to only comment about celebrities farting on trampolines and such*, just downvote this comment, and if it gets a good amount of negative votes, I'll try my best to stop.
*No disrespect. I love the celebrities farting on trampoline posts, and it's obviously why I keep coming back to Videogum.
