Will DJ Ol' Youngin' Save Judd Apatow's Funny People?

thumbnail icon: Will DJ Ol' Youngin' Save Judd Apatow's Funny People?

Uh oh, trouble is brewing for Judd Apatow's upcoming Funny People. A Videogum commenter writes:

I've seen the movie. You will be disappointed. Everyone will be disappointed.

Yikes! I hope that we are all not disappointed, but I will admit that I've got some mixed feelings going into the movie! It just looks like it could go either way! I am an adult, and I can admit that! (Perhaps tomorrow, when my head is out of this yogurt cup, I will stop ending every sentence with an exclamation point! But for today it is the only way to hold a thought!) I'm just saying that the trailer looks very heavy on the Hallmark Emotions, and very light on the Laffs. Every time I see the trailer in a movie theater, when Jonah Hill says that thing to Jason Schwartzman about his grandfather passing through fire to get to hell, everyone around me laughs, but I never laugh at that part. For one, it just isn't that funny to me. Not because I am worried about Jason Schwartzman's fictional grandfather or something, it just doesn't make me laugh. Whatever. But also, isn't Purgatory supposed to be a cleansing fire on your way to heaven? So that joke that doesn't even make me laugh needs to get its facts straight.

I do hope the movie is good, though. And today, with another Raaaaaaaandy viral marketing video, that hope continues. This could be just what the movie needs. You know, the movie that I haven't seen and that I couldn't possibly know what it does or doesn't need. But, yes, more DJ Ol' Youngin'!

Kind of NSFW, guys.

Me and DJ Ol' Youngin' and Raaaaaaaandy live by three rules:

  1. They not ready.
  2. Motherfuckers need to know.
  3. Get your shit.

True. (Thanks for the tip, Octavis.)

I saw the trailer for Funny People this weekend. Adam Sandler is in it, and I wondered why, because he is anything but a funny person.

I thought the flame thing was a weird "joke" to end on too, and I always figure people are laughing at it more because of its placement as the "kicker joke", which we're programmed to laugh at, and not so much because it's funny (because it's not particularly).

This is clearly false advertisement. If you see the trailer you can tell that "Funny People" is an ironic title because it stars all these comedians (and comedic director) trying to do a "smart" movie. It's a serious look at the people behind the laughs and how they are real people and stuff.

On the other hand, this clip was kinda funny.

I was at Aziz's DVD/comedy central taping show in Brentwood and after the show he did a set as RAAAAAAANDY which included go go dancers, a gigantic lighted marquee that said RAAAAANDY, smoke machines, and dollar bills falling from the ceiling. It was pretty RAAAAAAAAAD.

That joke was not good, it doesn't make sense.

You don't go through fire to get to Hell, Hell itself is full of fire. It's not like there's some fire and maybe some burning, and then you get to the end and it's like "Here's a pina colada and your pass to the WATER SLIDE"

Haha, they should make a whole fuckin movie of Raaaaaandy and DJ Ol' Youngin'.

I don't think that could disappoint at all.

If this movie is at least 40% Raaaaaaandy, it'll be be worthwhile. Otherwise it looks pretty weak.

I had the exact same reaction, except with my pants down.

Oh, and I second the idea that the movie should be entirely about Randy and DJ Ol' Youngin'.

I'm praying this shit isn't Standup II. Honestly? I bet it's Apatow's Terms of Endearment. And I mean that in a good way.

The new trailer that played before Bruno actually took out the Hallmark cancery part entirely, which I would say is a good call if I hadn't already seen it, so now I don't care. But the RZA made me laugh for real.

You know, I'll take a little less Randy if it means more Yo Teach!

But Randy is definitely worth a spin-off DVD or Comedy Central special or two.

Aziz is coming up with Raaaaaaaandy's material himself, right? Apatow always seems into letting funny people (snap alert) do their own thing, which is awesome but doesn't necessarily assuage my doubts about the movie. I need to know who to give credit for the most baller death of all time.

So- Dane Cook does not equal funny.
Randy imitating Dane Cook's spazmotic dance and obnoxious yelling does equal funny.

What part makes the funny? The DJ? The oral sex? The Raaaaaandy?

I'm a little drunk, so I should be laughing at everything, but I'm still not laughing at this.

This whole time I thought Raaaaandy was the tops, but I just didn't know-- i just did NOT know about Ol' Youngin. Notice that serious ass look on his face after he stated the third rule! All, seriously, guys, you need to work harder on getting your shit.

Lately I'd been assuming I needed some cavities dealt with, but no: what I need is a new DJ, equipped with them echo Saaaaaandy sounds.

(I'm in love, and there's no going back.)
