Duh: The McCain Girls Are Not Real

thumbnail icon: Duh: The McCain Girls Are Not Real

The beloved (reviled) McCain Girls are not real. SURPRISE. There aren't actually three slightly unhinged women making weird McCain-based cover songs of truly unpleasant 80s hits and putting them up on YouTube independently. The New York Times breaks the story:

Drum roll, please: The creators of the McCain Girls turn out to be the comedy team behind 23/6, a five-month-old Web site owned by an affiliate of IAC/InterActiveCorp that parodies the news. The site, at 236.com, uses the motto "Some of the news, most of the time."

In the spirit of full disclosure, I used to work for 23/6 (see my work here.) What made the video such a success was that it was unattributed, lending it a momentary legitimacy. It seems impossible that these women exist, but then again, we have all watched YouTube and we know what is possible. Still, no one is really surprised that this apparent joke turns out to be an actual joke, are they? Mr. McCain?

To be fair, what else can McCain say? "I think these women seem mentally unstable and while I appreciate their support I wish that they had found a different, more private outlet to express their enthusiasm for my campaign. And if it turns out that this is all a joke expertly constructed by comedians Jon Benjamin and Patrick Borelli for a left-leaning satirical news website co-developed by the Huffington Post and media conglomerate IAC, I will not feel embarrassed, because of course I have suspected that all along"? No. He is not going to say that.
