Mind Games Make Nintendo Wii Look Like An Asshole

thumbnail icon: Mind Games Make Nintendo Wii Look Like An Asshole

I apologize if we're coming in on this story a little bit late, but it's a total mind blower, so good luck complaining about my timing when your mind is all blown and stuff. The following is from a New York Times article published on Sunday about a new videogame developer and their specialized headset. Prepare yourself for the mind explosion.

Put on the headset, made by Emotiv Systems in San Francisco, and when a giant boulder blocks the path in a game you are playing, you can levitate it -- not by something as crude as a keystroke, but just by concentrating on raising it, said Tan Le, Emotiv's president. The headset captures electrical signals when you concentrate; then the computer processes these signals and pairs a screen action with them, like lifting a stone or repairing a falling bridge.

HOLY SHIT. At first I was going to make a joke like, oh, right, who hasn't been waiting years to repair a fallen bridge using only their mind, but the joke isn't funny because I WOULD LOVE TO REPAIR A FALLEN BRIDGE USING ONLY MY MIND. The technology behind this system is similar to the one they used on those monkeys who could move robotic arms using their minds, which was also the basis for a funny video with Paul Scheer that just went up last weekend (relevant!) Well who is laughing now, Paul Scheer? No one, because we are all too busy being like "Fuuuuuuuuck."

In five years from now, when the world is ruled by a cruel seven-year-old tyrant who has mastered his Emotiv mind control headset in unexpected ways we're going to look back on this day with our heads hung low (because Leader makes them hang that way), but for now it's seriously awesome.

just imagine combining this with a GTA-like New York, where you can smash honking livery cabs into roaring motorcycles at 3am with your mind. or the best selling game of all time, Emotiv Zapped.
