Is It Possible To Put Video Games In Jail? Because Far Cry 2 Should Go There

WHAT IS THIS GAME?

I've always found the Medal of Honor videogames in which you portray a soldier during World War II to be pretty depressing. In light of the tremendous sacrifices that thousands of men and women made in that war in order to provide us with the freedom and international stability to actually play videogames, playing videogames in which you vicariously re-enact their greatest horror kind of seems like an offensive waste of that sacrifice. But at least those games aren't insanely racist depictions of atrocities going on right now. You go into the war-torn regions of post-colonial Africa and hunt people down? Perfect. Now what's the code I enter to turn the gun around and shoot myself in the face? a-b-a-b-x-y-up-down-L1-R1-select-start? Is it a-b-a-b-x-y-up-down-L1-R1-select start?

Gabe, if you think this is racist, you should watch some trailers for Resident Evil 5 sometime.

I'm not a fan of first person shooters, but, c'man. Medal of Honor is no different from any World War 2 movie in it's appropriateness. And it was created by Steven Spielberg. You're just being racist against mediums D:

Also, Far Cry 1 (also a game I didn't play and don't really care about) was a big deal because it was an first person shooter set in a realistic out door environment; a tropical island. Far Cry 2, I'm assuming, is taking that same environmental concept and applying it to a savanna, and then basing the story around things that actually happen in Africa. I don't see how it's "racist" to set a game in a country where people aren't white. To suggest that it's criminally irreverent for a video game to be based on reality is pretty Old Guy of you, Gabe.

Someone called you out as being "Old Guy."

If you really want to chastise entertainment projects as without merit because they don't have benevolent intentions, you're gonna have a long list to construct.

First and foremost, you gotta blame "Donkey" Kong for the accepted illiteracy in our country.

You know what's kinda funny? The Adult Swim hip hop thing you were excited about a couple of posts back? Sponsored by Far Cry 2.

I remember tuning into the season premiere of South Park a short while back and was treated to this entire trailer before the start of the show. After two whole minutes of carnage and blowing up Africans every which way, my wife and I looked at each other and both simultaneously said, "What the fuck is this?" I then proceeded to feel bad for humanity and the state of an American zombi-fied childhood in front of a television. And then I watched the season premiere of South Park. And it was not funny. . . Then I just felt sorry for myself.

I'm calling bullshit on this post. Crime-themed escapism is crime-themed escapism when it's set in London, New York and fictionalised regions of Africa just the same. Straight up, I do not understand what a reasonable person might find racist about this.

So it's just swell and dandy to go around killing Nazis in Medal Of Honor, but it's extremely racist and a moral crisis that your playing a game that is set in a modern day war set against genocidal Nazi-like terrorists in Africa? That's some fucked up logic.

That post is more offensive to me, a black American male, than anything that game could throw at me.

Actually, I was saying that they're both moral crises. But have fun, gamer!

Gabe, you are super correct. (That transcends regular correct and attains a higher level of correctness.) And it would be really nice if things featuring people purporting to be African didn't make use of that same, generic, racist-by-way-of-laziness-and-active-avoidance-of-dialect-coaches "accent." It's like watching Law & Order. Each person with That Accent could be from Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria... it doesn't appear to matter to the producers. (Corollary note: The same producers feel that everyone from Hungary, Slovakia, Russia, and Iran all sound like Boris Badanoff.) Bah.

I am a gamer, and I have to say I agree with you. I'm regularly appalled by games like this, or GTA, or the WWII games (which I feel very bad about, because once my very old grandfather, who fought in WWII say one, and was very angry), but yet I still play them. It's bizarre, because on a conscious level, my pacifist brain says "this shit is fucked up," but my reptile subconscious is saying "OH! EXPLOSIONS! AWESOME!"
This one has jumped out at me as hitting a little too close to current reality, though. Sort of like a "Darfur tournament '06" feel to it...

Meh...You're a good guy in this world at least. You're supposed to be killing the warring factions and eventually the arms dealer that enables them. It's a pretty shallow story compared to Hollywood, but that's how it goes in games.
