The TWSS Archives: The At The Movies Promo Trailer Moment

Date: September 1, 2009
Location: Internet
Description: In extended-length promotional trailer for victorious upcoming season of At the Movies in which reviled Ben Lyons and loathed Ben Mankiewicz have been replaced by two of nation's more thoughtful and respected film critics, one of said new and most welcome replacements issues a shameless TWSS at 03:55 mark. As with most instances of TWSS, user seems ignorant of secondary, unintended TWSS meaning behind original intention of stated nonsexual interpretation of TWSS, and yet in this particular case, the non-TWSS meaning of the TWSS seems like very poor word-choice rather than simply innocent inclusion of TWSS. In that sense, TWSS is graded in the High Funny to Very High Funny range. SIDENOTE: otherwise, new season of At the Movies looks like a smart return to show's intellectual and tonal roots; a rare American success story.

I'm glad I watched that, because the show looks really good, but the TWSS was a big letdown.

Agreed. I missed the "3:55 mark" in Gabe's paragraph and watched the whole thing waiting for something hilarious. Then I gave it a good think to try and figure out where it was ( "'Movies are an art form that can make fantasies real'? That's what she said? No...") before I reread and caught the time mark, only to be let down.

No threesomes for either of you. I hope you're happy now.

Well, maybe we'll start our own threesome, and won't you feel foolish then.

SERIOUS reviews by SERIOUS journalists (this time, guys (sorry about before).)

I love how that video was just one slow, magnificent burn on the dunces who got sacked.

Yeah my favorite part was all the "SERIOUS JOURNALISTS, SERIOUSLY SAVING AMERICAN CINEMA ONE FILM REVIEW AT A TIME, SERIOUSLY!!!" and then it cut to A.O. Scott commending someone on his subtlety.

The suggestion of a three way with Ben Lyons and Ben Mankiewicz didn't make me laugh, it just made me aroused. Thanks.

As much as a used to love At The Movies with Ebert & Siskel (and later Roeper), the 2-3 minute quickfire review format pales in comparison to the modern, longer, in-depth film review podcasts and radio shows, like the /Filmcast and Filmspotting (the latter of which both A.O. Scott and Michael Phillips have been guests).

At The Movies might suffice for your mom and dad, but it's these new interweb, fan-driven outlets are the future of professional movie criticism.

Sure, guys. It's all pillows and clouds and innocuous hints at gangbangs until Michael Phillips reaches through the screen and starts his evil rapefest with his minion (only 10 years as a film critic vs. Phillip's eternal 25 years) A.O. "Make a Fantasy Real" Scott looking on.

That was only a TWSS because the guy looks like Bob Saget with a goatee. Otherwise, rather pedestrian.

Ha ha, very funny, Gabe.

Also, I'm really glad and excited that this show has returned to something that totally doesn't make me vomit with my mind. Hooray!

Does "Very High Funny" mean that once you're very high, it becomes funny, or just a generally extreme level of humor?

oh cool i LOVE ao scott! really. i always read his reviews of movies i care enough to think about, and i almost always agree with him. his opinions aren't nearly so populist as ol' ebert's are though, i wonder how that is going to go: this format of show (which i agree with 'gradstudentsaretheworst' is best for mom & dad) but with rather elite almost snobbish-tending critics at the helm? weird!
