The Mysteries Of Pittsburgh Don't Care To Shake These Zipper Blues

The Mysteries of Pittsburgh trailer, you guys:

I didn't even know this existed. (You can't fire me, I quit.) And to be honest, the beginning of the trailer had me nervous, what with the overly-intense synth-brood music. But by the end of the trailer it definitely does resemble Michael Chabon's fun and funny first novel, right down to the slightly overbearing stress on the idea that growing up is MEANINGFUL and IMPORTANT (but dude wrote it when he was, like, 15, so we can forgive him for having the heavy-hands of a baby).

What is it about coming of age stories that never gets old even after you yourself have already passed through the cleansing fires of adolescence (or post-college head-against-wall-banging, or whatever)? It's like hearing "1979" by the Smashing Pumpkins. Even when you get to the age where you realize that the song doesn't actually make any sense, you're still like "Oh man, memories. I could really go for an ice cold VISA card right now."

This is still my favorite book (I'm mentally/emotionally stuck at 16 forever) and I've even read the script which bastardizes the love triangle and eliminates an entire main character, so I can only agree with you that it resembles the novel superficially. But I still can't wait to see this movie! I think they cast Art perfectly.

Wow, Pittsburgh sure looks like a beautiful and exciting place. Let's see, if I peer out my Pittsburgh window, I see...

an interstate highway
a burnt down abandoned funeral home
telephone wire
row homes
sink holes

I guess I should go try to find one of those industrial area rock band rave parties.

I can't see Peter Sarsgaard without thinking of the terrible SNL sketch where they were all pirates. Does that mean it was funny?

Man, everyone in this movie is cast so perfectly ten years ago when they were remotely age-appropriate.

Peter Sargsgaard is thirty-eight years old and Sienna Miller is not a lithe young man called Arthur, so I'm going to go ahead and say some of the casting of these roles/ re-purposing of the plot might be off by an entirely different novel. Growing up is so hard to do when you're nearing forty.

This is one of my favorite books. I have serious misgivings about them eliminating the Arthur Lecomte character (although maybe technically they "combined" it with that of Cleveland), and the trailer makes it seem like the film will be somewhat dull and predictable. And maybe the book was predictable coming of age fare, too, but the story and the characters were beautifully done. Looking forward to seeing this, and I hope it does justice to the source material.

Oh god, I hate HATE coming of age movies and this looks fucking awful. I don't even want to hate-fuck coming of age movies, I just want them to die slowly, tied to a tree in the woods.
Just sayin'.

Oh haha, this is the movie Sienna Miller was filming when she got in trouble for calling it "Shittsburgh."

Holy shit, wasn't that basically forever ago? That doesn't bode well.

Why did they let the director of Dodgeball direct this movie? Those Terry Tate commercials were great, but does that mean we need to give this guy a real directing career? I guess this gives hope to all the 20 somethings making comedy shorts on YouTube.

no, yeah, don't do this. It had a special screening around november here (here being pittsburgh) because of all the people in the city who helped work on it and nobody's proud of it. It's not very good, although the trailer kinda makes it look otherwise.

That was a good book, but looks like a really crappy movie.
Memo to Hollywood: Those things with a lot of words on paper (the rest of them call them books, although you all seem to have mistaken them for some sort of loathsome thing that you must suck the soul out of and destroy) are JUST FINE WITHOUT YOU. There is no reason for you to put pictures to go with those words, presumably the readers (those of us with intact imaginations, unlike you) have already done so in what we normal humans call "our minds."
Oh, and please fuck off and die.
Thank you,
The Rest of Us
