The Wrestler Looks As Great As It Does Sad

Darren Aronofsky's The Wrestler trailer, you guys:

Too sad! Actually, the quotes are way sadder than the actual trailer. All that "Witness the resurrection of Mickey Rourke" and "Harmonic convergence of player and part that happens once in a blue moon" stuff. Yeah, the harmonic convergence of sad player and only slightly sadder part. This movie isn't going to win any Academy Awards for makeup. Dude actually looks like that. It should come as no surprise to anyone that Mickey Rourke is extraordinarily capable of playing a demolished cipher of overwhelming human sadness crafted by the blunt force trauma of a lifetime of mistakes. ACTING!

i predict total hugeness. culturally, it's going to be a cross between twister, titanic, and rocky.

oh max, i hope you're not joking, because i was thinking the same thing, in a totally unironic way.

the harmonic convergence of the real life and movie sadness might explode my tear ducts.

This does look great....good to see Mickey Rourke getting credit like this. One of my favorite films of his is Rumble Fish, with Matt Dillon, Diane Lane, Nic Cage, Christopher Penn, hell...it even had Tom Waits and a pretty good soundtrack by Stewart Copeland! The Motorcycle Boy reigns...

That was definitely one of those mid-period Coppola movies that deserved more attention. Just a really fine movie.

I saw this movie at AFI Fest, and this trailer, while great, doesn't do it justice at all. Competely blew me away. Obviously, Rourke was awesome (not only onscreen but in his red velvet blazer and matching hat that he wore to the screening, with 4 foot wallet chain), but Marisa Tomei was fucking phenomenal. After this and Before The Devil Knows You're Dead, is the key to a great Tomei performance that she has to go nude? Something about laying it all out there that allows her to give better performances? Or am I just distracted by the boobage, and simply think she's giving a great performance?

I also liked her in 'In the Bedroom'. She could've went the route of just about every beautiful young millionaire actress has (Bullock, Diaz, Roberts, Ryan, etc) and chosen schlocky silly roles but she's been really good with her choices, she knows she can act certain roles that demand a bit more and does mostly that.

This looks really good. Hopefully Rourke will start being more selective and won't do all the lousy movies that'll get offered to him.

What a year for indie films, just when I'm old enough to see them.

Boy in the Striped Pajamas, Slumdog Millionaire, and now this.
