The Ramen Girl: Star Wars, But With Ramen

The Ramen Girl, the little movie about an American girl in Tokyo (Brittany Murphy) who gets dumped by her boyfriend and decides to apprentice herself to a tough but fair Ramen chef, has been taken down from a high shelf at Warner Bros., dusted off, and given a (somewhere) release date of January 17. Soon, we'll have the answer we need after seeing this trailer: Is it SUPPOSED to be funny? It's supposed to be funny. Of course. Right?:

This makes me want to go out and buy some Top Ramen so I can announce, with tears streaming down my face: "I want to cook Ramen!" (It's pronounced "Raaah-menn. Raaaaaaaah-men." by the way. We learned, from this trailer.)

I'm confuzzed. Why doesn't it end with her competing in the International Ramen Noodle Olympics that're held annually in Tokyo?

It makes my heart cry...like when I see Julia LD being misused as a cast SNL member in those reruns.

I should have called them using Asobi Seksu at the end.

I better learn to love this, because I just know my girlfriend's gonna make me take her to this.

Oh the Japanese. What a strange and foreign people, with their cuisine that is so befuddling, but also new and wondrous. Only a naive, wide-eyed, blond American waif has the metaphorical stones to learn the ancient art of boiling a package of noodles that you can buy for 13 cents in any corner store in America - that is the staple food of college students and self-seeking 20-somethings across the land.

so ... the drama derives entirely from the fact that she can't speak japanese? this movie was funnier when bill murray starred in it.

Well this looks horrible but it is kind of awesome that her mentor is the guy from Tampopo.

So January 17 is the DVD release date, then.

Things this trailer teaches us:

1. Japanese people eat ramen
2. White peeps visiting Japan inevitably move in different time signatures from Asian peeps. Look! Tokyo is so fast! So full of school girls!
2. Brittany Murphy is adorable when confused by Japanese people, eating ramen.

Wait... the man only speaks Japanese. Yet the girl can speak English to him, and he can speak Japanese to her, and they can both understand each others' languages perfectly.

Why did they have a band from New York playing at the end? Random.

i think this movie has to win the hunt for the worst movie of all time. it's like the karate kid meets kung fu panda, but less realistic! p.s. did anyone else feel like they were tripping on acid for a second when the ramen cat on the wall waves to her?

This better not be huge and then cause a superficial love of Asobi Seksu by awful teenagers and sorority girls.

Also, I love how they gave the entire film away without bothering to hide it.

Does a movie need to be first viewed in order to be named the worst movie of all time? This trailer's answer: No, I am the worst movie of all time.

what I think is strange is that they portray Ramen as this dish that is treated with so much respect and care. In Japan, ramen is something you pay 350 yen for when your stumbling home drunk at 5am.
