Ricky Gervais Makes Liar Liar But For Comedy Nerds

The Invention of Lying trailer, you guys:

I bet Ricky Gervais has had this conversation a lot:

"So, it's Liar Liar."
"No, it's not Liar Liar."
"How is it it different from Liar Liar?"
"Well, instead of Jim Carrey's phoned in face-gymnastics and a supporting cast of professional pratfallers, my movie has an incredibly talented and funny cast, including cameos by Jason Bateman, Martin Starr, Christopher Guest, and John Hodgman. And the narrative is about an alternate reality, which is far more interesting and complex for dramatic exploration than some kind of family friendly pseudo-fantasy built around a child's wish."
"Well, it looks like Liar Liar."
"It's not Liar Liar!"
"It looks like it."
"UGH!"
"Ugh yourself! I'm going to go watch Little Nicky."

He's had that conversation verbatim probably. Little Nicky has found a second life on DVD.

I'm looking forward to this movie, but I'm a little worried it will be sweetly funny but ultimately forgettable, like Ghost Town. With that cast, and that premise, I expect pants-wetting hilarity.

Totally different movie concept. Liar, Liar was about a guy who starts telling the truth and becomes a better person. The Invention of Lying is about a guy who starts telling lies and becomes a better person. WAKE UP, GABE!

Frank Lloyd Wrong

In movie trailers, ELO's "Mr. Blue Sky" is the comedy nerd's "Sound of a record needle scratching followed by James Brown's 'I Feel Good.'"

I really hope that the actual movie (Liar Liar 2: Lie Harder) is much less whimsical and a lot more soul crushing, I like my Gervais to come with a little soul crushing.

I like my Gervais to make me so uncomfortable that I actually have to leave the room for a minute. That's Gervais on the top of his game.

Wait, didn't Ricky Gervais say he was quitting acting?

Maybe it's not like Liar Liar at all, maybe it's a lie.

When I see this, I'm going to shout out all of the tv roles I recognize these people from ("A.D.A. Alexandra Cabot!") I can't help it. I have Hey! It's That Guy Tourettes.

I, for one, am really looking forward to seeing this. Ghost Town was actually pretty good, and Gervais didn't even write that. He wrote this one, it has lots of funny people, should be great. Yeah.

I'm excited, it's like James Morrow's "City of Truth" but with more movie stars and less childhood terminal illness.

Sorry for those expecting another Ghost Town. What they're completely leaving out of the trailer is the part where Gervais's character invents a religion that is basically Christianity (there are no religions before he invents lying), and from that point on, the movie becomes less 'quirky comedy starring all your favorite people' and more 'clunky construct used to make points about all religions being bullshit over and over and over'... not surprised they're marketing it as the former. I was really disappointed.

I saw a screening of this film and it was TERRIBLE. It was almost as if they didn't get their own concept. Run from this movie.

I thought Ghost Town was juvenile and boring. Ricky can do much better.
