Funny People: What Is With These Dark, Learning, Hugging Comedies?

thumbnail icon: Funny People: What Is With These Dark, Learning, Hugging Comedies?

The trailer for the long-awaited July Judd Apatow dramedy Funny People came out this weekend. (You might have also noticed Funny People advertising in the instantly-notorious Oscar-credits upcoming-movie "Old Dogs Montage.") It features Thin Seth Rogen, Adam Sandler acting suspiciously SPANGLISHY, Judd Apatow's kids again, and Jonah Hill stretching his range by being the comic relief to a deadly disease rather than just a bad breakup. Let's learn about life!:

Observe And Report just looks dark, but this looks positively learny. Judd Apatow does James L. Brooks! I'll take it. No, really, as long as the Spanglish prediction turns out to be slander.) That said, let's hope the Red Band trailer is gonna be a lot funnier.

+1 for using The Postal Service in the trailer

Really? Because I liked it OTHER THAN the use of The Postal Service. It was like the trailer was saying, "Hey, guys, this man is seriously dying. The Postal Service, okay?" People don't die to a Postal Service soundtrack.

Movies that have "People" in the title tend to be real learny. Smart People, Ordinary People, Shy People, this. (Ruthless People exception noted.)

Why did Apatow have to go learny on us?

Freaks and geeks, 40 year virgin, knocked up, weren't all slapstick, Apatow likes to mix in the drama with the comedy.

Yeah, but throw in a terminal disease and you're getting into some potentially soapy, late-Bette Midler territory. That's not good.

Everything but Sandler.

Well, Sony (I think) are putting all their eggs in one basket here. My movie nerd knowledge means I know that they're only allowed one trailer a year longer than 2:30, and this is that trailer for them.

Doesn't look terrible, but horribly mediocre.

I can see it coming: He thinks he's dying, finds out he's not dying, then actually ends up dying.

I just don't know. I love Judd but he's not perfect. I love Seth, the man is funny & gorgeous (but grow back your jewfro!). I don't like Jonah at all. And Adam is hit & miss, usually miss. It's a tough call, I'll see what the professional reviewers have to say before I go & see it.

I thought he said: "I don't know how to fight -- I'm a Canadian."
That make me laugh harder than the real line.

The only part I'm scared about is Adam Sandler's band.

Are you implying that Lindsay is not a professional critic? You must not have read jer astute observations on The Real Housewives of Atlanta.
