Fantastic Mr. Fox Looks (Wait For It) Fantastic

Fantastic Mr. Fox trailer, you guys:

Oh, this looks great! It has such a nice homemade feel to it, like Wes Anderson got together with George Clooney and Bill Murray on a rainy Sunday afternoon and they put the whole thing together themselves. You remember during the 2004 election when the Democrats tried to take back the word "liberal" and return it to its proper usage as an adjective describing a particular political philosophy rather than a loathsome epithet? That didn't work! But I feel like this movie is basically doing the same thing for the word "twee." Gone are the bilious days of the early-to-mid '00s when "twee" was a chuckled insult casually lobbed in the face of the skinny and pale. Now it is a badge of honor.

"High five!"
--Stuart Murdoch

Seriously, though, if this movie is as good as the trailer looks, it could become the stuff of legend. Between this and Where the Wild Things Are it seems increasingly clear that the revolution will not be computer generated in South Korea!

George Clooney's voice is a little distracting, but otherwise yay! Reclaim "twee" you guys.

I had to watch the trailer twice to make sure I wasn't missing something. You never can tell but I don't think it looks that good.

Visually, I was just not that into it either. It's cool that it's Wes Anderson and everything, but there are people out there that know how to do this better. Hopefully the voice acting and the story will save it for me, because I would hate for this thing to have to move forward without my approval.

i agree. i have no interest in seeing this based on this trailer. probably still will, since it's wes anderson. but, meh.

I think it is the dead pan delivery on the voice acting... it works great with Anderson's style in live action, but so far it doesn't look like it translates well into animation, particularly children's animation, when the characters are meant to be a little over the top.

What's with the "from the author who wrote Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" nonsense? Like we've never heard of Roald Dahl

Don't you TEST me, 20th Century Fox!
That bugged me, too. Apparently audiences hate literature more than ever. We didn't need this kind of hand-holding for Witches, did we?

I know!! fucking ridiculous!

I've always been too obsessed with Roald Dahl (my first internet search ever, at the age of 9, was "Roald Dahl fan club," and upon reaching one I learned that he was dead), and I constantly imagine moments in popular culture that are causing him to turn in his grave. I think this trailer is one of them. and I don't think Roald Dahl would be happy about the George Clooney involvement either.

Agreed. "From the author who wrote that one story about a drink which had bubbles that went DOWN and caused you to fart yourself into the air" would have been more compelling.

wow, I was just researching some other movie and this popped up, and I'm like - OMG a tip for Gabe! I never have those! Then i checked to make sure you hadn't already written about it and whoops.

I even said something like "no tweemo" in the email. You sir, are correct: twee like If You're Feeling Sinister, not like... anything else that's generally called twee.

But i'm thinking while I love the visual style, I fully expect the movie to kinda suck. In that it will tell a story that might as well be housed in any old computer-generated craptasia.

(Dammit Anderson, after coming back a LITTLE stronger with Darjeeling... OK I'm going to reserve judgment, and put it in my lovingly hand-woven jute box that holds my other miniature personal effects from the 90s.)

Sadly, kids don't know how good they're getting it -- Fantastic Mr. Fox, Where The Wild Things Are, even the recent Harry Potter movie -- these are looking to be classic films... but they'll be lining up to see Twilight instead... Ungrateful little bastards.

It's amazing how, even in animated anthropomorphic form, this looks, very much, like a Wes Anderson movie. Cinematography, typeface, Bill Murray - it's all there.

Also, can't wait to see the claymation Jarvis Cocker.

Also, twee apparently means that animals animated to look like maggots are crawling under their fur (re-watch it, you'll see what i mean ;___; )
The book was great though, so maybe this won't be hopeless.

surprised Wes Anderson's name is never shown or mentioned. Of course, the kids know more who george clooney and jason schwartzmann are than Wes. As a fan of Wes's work, this looks too kid-ish but I'll probably watch it.

okay... I just watched the trailer again and, oops, I am absolutely going to see this, and probably like it. The kids too. The quiet in the way it's presented doesn't particularly make an exciting trailer (the fact that it's trying so hard is the problem), but I think will make a really great movie.

Wes Anderson bets a Fantastic Mr. Fox. It's only a matter of time before Michel Gondry sees his Fantastic Mr. Fox and raises him a Berenstain Bear or four.

This looks amazing, but the one thing this does make me feel a little iffy about this is the fact that the very fact that this is animation (and also somewhat for kids) means we lose a little of that Wes Anderson subtlety we all know/love/try to inject in every goddamn "indie" film since then, no matter how fitting it is. The motions are more pronounced, the lines are enunciated, etc.

Of course I might be saying that because I'm judging this by the trailer, which by nature tend to make even the best movies look like tired cliches. I remember thinking Life Aquatic looked lame in the preview, but when I watched it, it was...better than I expected.

The fact that Wes clearly didn't direct this trailer is also evident in that last song choice. How a filmmaker known for some of the most kickass soundtracks lets this one slip by is beyond me.

I'll shut up now.

I'm not sure what there is NOT to like about this movie. Who doesn't love this story? And what's with all the snarky snarks about foxes and rabbits being friends? Like every movie should be based on SCIENCE FACT? And the comments about it being for nerds or something...like I don't know what the deal is overe there, but in the UK it has never been 'uncool' or whatever you kids are saying these days, to like Roald Dahl. He is planet the best and has all the good idea jeans on at once! Like I know the gum is all about the snarky sacrastic humour and I LOVE IT FOR THAT, but c'mon you guys. What about nostalgiaforthestoriesofouryouthgum YEH? YAY for this movie =)
