Batman's Stupid Voice To Star In The Watchmen Movie

So, I've got some good news and some bad news. The good news is that there's a new Watchmen trailer, you guys. The bad news is what's up with Rorschach's voice in the new Watchmen trailer, you guys?

Point: I feel like the world of superheroes is already demanding enough on the limitations of one's willingness to suspend all of the disbelief that we shouldn't also have to put up with these strained, faux-menacing gravel voices. Now that it's an honest to goodness trend for the genre, I feel like we're just setting up a historical precedent for future mocking disdain, the way that superheroes were derided for decades for wearing all those tights. And I say that as someone who happily suspends the disbelief every time. I've seen fucking Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. Don't judge me. As far as the Watchmen is concerned, I think that the trailers look really good, but that Zak Snyder is such a ridiculous garbage clown director from the Ugh, For Real? School of Filmmaking that I'm just totally braced for utter disappointment.

Counterpoint: shut up you gay retard, Watchmen is going to kick a$$!

In a forum, there is always one person whose opinion is that others should stop having an opinion (I'm not saying stop having an opinion, I'm saying stop whining about the voice) well, in that case, maybe your opinion is that the voice doesn't bother you. Maybe you should have just said so. Because the way it's phrased, you sort of sound like a baby.

And yeah, the voice is really kind of irritating. Cringe-worthingly so. (that's not even a word) Yeah, but it should be.

at first I was like "hey, that's not so bad," but then that muse song that totally rips off phillip glass started and I realized some things just bother some people. like that stupid muse song and me.

Yes,D, that voice does suck. Objective, provable, science fact. But arguing with Miller fans is like when you would try to tell people Phanton Menace was awful and they wouldn't hear it, but then years later would claim they hated it too. FANBOY FAIL.

And Zach Snyder is visionary. I know this b/c the trailer to his new movie told me so. Anyway, I hope he doesn't ruin it. The visuals look amazing.

To be fair, Rorschach has more of an excuse than Batman. The comic gives you the impression he has a weird gravelly voice. The way they did it is still dumb, but it makes more sense for him than for Batman. I'm more disappointed that he seems insufficiently insane.

Also: Frank Miller has nothing to do with Watchmen.

But see, Rorschach has to sound awesome and cool, so that when he's unmasked, not to give anything away, um, you're surprised. (SPOILER: Rorschach is played by Gary Coleman.)

Yaaay Watchmen.

Now where do I go to whine about this Black Keys ad up at the top? It keeps expanding on me and getting all up in my click space.

To be fair, Rorschach's voice is less gravely and Nathan Explosiony than Batman's was, and is (therefore) less stupid. In other news (the same news) this just got me pretty excited for this movie. And it's hard for me to be excited for any movie that's not Harry Potter today (new trailer you guys http://www.the-leaky-cauldron.org/2008/11/14/new-half-blood-prince-trailer !)

You can't really throw Alan Moore in my face since he is such a vocal opponent of the entire movie, not just Rorschach's voice. BUT, I take your point. HOWEVER, I don't have a problem with ACTUAL deep, gravelly voices, I have a problem with PRETEND deep gravelly voices. Which is what this is.

You've raised another issue entirely. What's happened to all the real deep, gravelly voices? Where are these actors hiding? Or who is hiding them?

A) Much like BatBale in Dark Knight, when you're fighting crime in a ridiculous rubber suit, you have to mask your voice. And masking your voice while fighting crime will lead to a low growly voice as you want to intimidate people.

B) That Muse song doesn't rip off Philip Glass, Bellamy openly admitted Glass was his main inspiration for Take A Bow. It works well for the trailer and won't be in the movie.

C) No one else picked up on WATCHMEN IS OVER?

I heard that "Watchmen is over" comment... I seem to recall the group never once refers to themselves as the Watchmen in the graphic novel... I wonder if we're just hearing some dialogue out of context or if they've changed the name of their hero association in the movie to keep people from asking "Why is it called Watchmen?"

Obviously none of you complainers have read the graphic novel. His voice is supposed to be that way.

I think what brandon is trying to say that the speech bubbles used for Rorschach make it seem as if his voice is meant to have a sort of gravelly edge to it. Even though it's hardly conclusive, i'm almost positive that his voice is meant to sound that way.

All that being said, Batman was definitly the first thing that came to mind when i heard the voice.

I'm excited, but then I remember that I know the whole story...which kind of ruined No Country For Old Men for me. So I guess I'll be going to see what I already know is going to happen in actual motion instead of illustrations.

The trailer looks great. The voice does bug me, and no, there's nothing in the novel that indicates that his voice should be gravelly. I personally thought it should be a bit more monotone, direct, curt. Emotionless as opposed to harsh and obviously world beaten. I'd rather he sounded more like Hannibal Lecter than that crappy Batman voice.

Geez, Gabe. The more I read your posts, the more convinced I am that you're dipping scones into your tea when you come across these trailers, and then you respond 'POPPYCOCK" as you dictate these blog posts via telegraph. Also you have a stupid butt.

Zak Snyder's not a visionary, but the WORST? Please.

Batman has the gravel voice so people he comes in contact with only a regular basis don't recognize his voice. Why is that so hard to believe?

That's the only way to do it. He's not going to just try to deepen his voice, or use a voice changer (that'd be clownish), so he completely destroys all semblance of tone in his voice. I wouldn't recognize it as Christian Bale's voice if I didn't know already.

What the superheroes of today aren't understanding is that they need to start vocoder-ing the shit out of their voice. It's the only way! A little bit of T-Pain/Weezy one moment, and then that low-bassy chopped and screwed voice the next.

They should just have Tom Waits do a voice over. He has a real and awesome gravelly voice that would be perfect. Also, I hate that Muse song so much. Good god, Muse is a cheese-fest. Also, fun bit of trivia, Stephanie Meyer based one of the Twilight books off of Hysteria by Muse. That's why the books are one big epic fail that are inspiring what looks to be an even bigger face palm-fest.

I came to the same logical conclusion that others did about Batman's voice being an intentional cover to hide his identity, but then there was that scene when he talked to Alfred, IN THE BATCAVE, with that same stupid voice, for no fucking reason.

rorschach's word balloons in the comics are done in a rough edge. it's supposed to symbolize that, yeah, his voice is a bit weird. if this is all they could come up with for a movie though... yikes.
