17 Again Is So Many Other Movies It Will Blow Your Mind

There's a new trailer for 17 Again, the movie where Matthew Perry wakes up to find out he's 17 again and Zac Efron. I think it looks kind of potentially funny, thanks to Tom Lennon and Leslie Mann:

It's not surprising that a movie once titled Untitled Zac Efron Project would be derivative and a little slapdash, but has any movie ever been more derivative? It's like the unintentional Scream of supernatural age-change movies...

This list will surely grow, but so far there are elements of:

Big (in reverse)
13 Going On 30 (in reverse)
The Freaky Fridays (without the switching)
Like Father Like Son (ditto)
Never Been Kissed (but supernatural)
It's A Wonderful Life (The jumping janitor is Clarence)
Back To The Future (There's even a Biff! And he looks like Biff!)
And some other movie called Seventeen Again that involved a mad scientist.

But so far from IMDB digging, 17 Again's plot seems to match up most with a 1986 Disney Channel movie called Young Again, starring Robert Urich, Lindsay Wagner, and Keanu Reeves in the Zac Efron role (then known as "K.C. Reeves.) And, get this: that movie was written by none other than David Simon, who would later go on to create The Wire! There's some cocktail party conversation for April 2009, when surely everyone at every cocktail party will be talking about 17 Again. You're welcome!

I'm pretty sure there was another one like this in the 80s with George Burns and someone obscure and maybe even Pauly Shore(!). Was it "18 Again"? Why do I remember this?

Ha... 18 Again! Yes. When the teenager switches bodies with his 81 year old grandfather played by George Burns. Pauly Shore is in it, but he just plays a zany friend. The body switching happens with Burns and his grandson played by Charlie Schlatter who has the distinction of playing Ferris Bueller in the shortlived tv show, Ferris Bueller, which featured Jennifer Aniston in the Jennifer Grey "sister" role.

And any list of 80s body-switching movies needs to include Vice Vera with young Fred Savage and Judge Reinhold and Dream a Little Dream with the two Coreys and Jason Robards.

this movie looks like it's going to straddle a lot of ethical lines.

I can't wait to see how they deal with the daughter inevitably falling in love with him.

If they work Calvin Klein underwear into it, even better.

Exactly. If he's beating up the boys his daughter likes, she's going to get the wrong idea about his intentions. In the same vein, I am already cringing about the tender Zac Efron/Leslie Mann moments where she feels a weird connection to this 17-year-old. Eek.

Vice Versa should not only be included, it should be on top.

yes, it was 18 Again, with George Burns. Not Pauly Shore, but guess what - it's awesome.

i'm sort of a little eensy bit in love with zac efron. i don't know anything about him except that he's hot, but that is enough for me. also, i really want matthew perry to do well in life, and i was sad ''studio 60" was so stinky, so i am going to see this movie to support them both.

but at home, via netflix, because duh.

The trick with these body-switching/mystical reyoungification movies is to find a fresh, compelling DEVICE for the switching/reyoungification. I love that this movie's solution appears to be "falls off a bridge."

But he falls off a bridge INTO A WORMHOLE!

It's a fresh sci-fi twist.

i will go see this movie because i heart all things zac efron, but we should get one thing straight.

ZAC EFRON WILL NEVER GROW UP TO BE MATTHEW PERRY and that's where the flaw lies within this movie. Not the bridge thing, that's more plausible than Zac Efron looking like Matthew Perry.

I'm getting a Ghost vibe, too. Demi Moore sensing a connection to Swayze "trapped" in the body of Whoopi. When Leslie Mann was feeling up Zac's face in the trailer.

It's like Zac Efron will only star in a movie if he can a) sing, b) play basketball, c) both

while readingthis, i knew that my comment would be that the movie is going to piss me off because it'll make me not hate zac ephron. judging by the total absence of negative zac ephron posts, i'm not alone.

that and that stupid fucking credit listing font and song.

If Zac Efron looks like Matthew Perry (good thing to me) then perhaps the world won't be destroyed by High School Musical.
