Introducing The Videogum Movie Club

Let's all go to the movies, and let's all see the same movie, and let's discuss it here.

Back in January, we wrote a post asking you guys for your ideas and suggestions on how to make the site better. One commenter, thedave, suggested that we start some kind of Videogum Movie Club, and the more we thought about it, the more that seemed like a really smart idea. Good work, thedave. You haven't been commenting as much lately. You probably got that job as the President of the Ideas Factory.

Basically, this is going to be a way to start getting more main-run movie coverage onto the site, rather than just making fun of teaser trailers from the comfort of our pajamas and never actually following up when the movie comes out. But instead of just us going to see movies and shouting at you about it later from the highest tower of our blog castle, we'll all go see movies together. Kind of.

The way it's going to work is on Fridays, we will post that week's movie club selection on the Videogum Twitter. Members of the Videogum Movie Club will then find a screening over the weekend at their local cinema that fits their schedule, and the following Monday, we will post our post about it and open the comments section (as opposed to how we're always closing the comments section? Whatever, don't be a NARC) to the Movie Club, and we can have a lively funtimes discussion about it. Teamwork. Friendship.

The inaugural Videogum Movie Club Selection: Watchmen. Let's all meet back here Monday dressed as our favorite character from the movie. I'm going to be Mister Manhattan! See you there. Bye.

I think it's cute, but there is no denying it's a bit sad, too.

Sounds like a ball, y'all.

this would be an even better idea if you made everybody go see it at the same time and then everybody could be obnoxious and post comments with their 3G machines and pretend they have friends to watch movies with

Ugh, there was a fatty Manhattan (Dr. Manfattan?) at our midnight showing last night. I felt bad for him, but he looked confident enough.

We could also have local Videogum meet-ups, where we get together and make snarky comments about everything, then mark on each other's bodies with VoteUp/VoteDowns. WHO'S COMIN' WITH ME.

Good idea...and speaking of good ideas from that post, this one from Sarahdee should definitely be used for a Double Dog: "Gabe should probably have to read all the Twilight books back to back. And then act out key passages with the lady or vampire of his choice."

i'm in. hope you don't mind that i sigh really loudly to indicate how put out i am when your cell phone rings. why can't you just put it on vibrate when they show the reminder at before the movie starts. oh that's right. because you came in late and whispered loudly, during the trailers, that you can't see anything. whispering is supposed to be quiet didn't u know that? You're terrible. YAY! I am so much fun to go to the movies with. I'm so excited for you guys.

This is a great idea (as everyone so far has agreed).... I also love the idea of meeting up just for the fact that I have all these imaginary personalities and possible appearances of the regular gum groupies (grumpies?), and it would be pretty fun to actually meet REAL people. Being a part of an internet community like this is kinda like having imaginary friends....with wit and avatars!

Then again, what if it's like being really in love with characters of a great book (cause I'm really in love with you guys...whaaa??) and being really excited when a film adaptation comes out and then finding out the characters are not at all like you'd hoped and "the film"...er...group doesn't live up to your lofty expectations?

Ok, so that was an awful tie-in....and I probably just lost my invite to any future gum movie club cocktail parties or ice cream socials, but I doubt there's anyone in my neighborhood (Madison, WI) anyway. Are you regulars mostly NYC-ers? I think it would be pretty hilarious if you had to come dressed as your avatar....ok so maybe I'm just looking for an opportunity to wear a drinky crow suit and get schmammered with good peoples...did I take it too far?

Yeah wondergrrl, I live in San Antonio (that would be in TEXAS), so it would basically be me meeting up with me at the bar, having cocktails alone with my laptop and talking to you guys. AS USUAL. "Just kidding, I don't do that"

I'll join if we exclusively watch Paul Rudd movies, just so this entire idea fails, because who would want to do that?
