The Videogum List Of 100 Movies To See Before You Die

thumbnail icon: The Videogum List Of 100 Movies To See Before You Die

Yahoo! has released a list this week of the 100 Movies To See Before You Die. According to whom? Yahoo! Oh, sure. If there's one thing that I think of when I think of Yahoo!, it's EXPERTISE.

No, David Blaine.

I'm not even sure I know what a list of movies you should see before you die even means. I love movies as much as the next guy who loves movies a lot, but I get kind of grumpy if I go see a movie on a really nice day because who wants to sit in the dark when there's frisbee golf to be played? I'm sure as hell not going to sit around watching this shit if I'm about to die. I'LL BE IN THE STREETS! MAKING LOVE! Obviously, I'm sure they mean it in a more playful sense. This list is not actually intended only for people who have been medically diagnosed with a fatal disease. But even if this is just a list of the most essential movies, what the fuck is Titanic doing on there? And anyone who says that you absolutely must see Blazing Saddles before you die should go kill themselves. This list is junk! Sure, there's lots of good movies on here, but throw 100 darts at the wall and one of them is bound to hit the board. It's called probability science.

Fuck you, Yahoo! We're making our own list. After the jump, the complete Yahoo! List of 100 Movies to See Before You Die According to Yahoo! Then, in the comments, the Videogum List of 100 Movies to See Before You Die, Because Shut Up, Yahoo!

Diving Bell & The Butterfly: great movie but needs more time before you can really say it's a classic. Too soon. It is really good though. Don't get me wrong.

Dude that said Gummo? You are totally lying. I defy anyone to make a case for that piece of shit. You're just trying to be edgy. Give it a rest. Kids is better and it's not that great.

I'd expect these to be USA centric so no surprise there. I'd like to add Last LIfe in the Universe by Ratanaruang

Gummo is an absurd movie, but only in that it is absurd to imagine that so many repulsive things could happen in the lives of such a small collection of people over such a short period of time. The acting, in the scenes that aren't vox pop hillbilly interviews or improv, is atrocious. I don't think that a movie that intentionally avoids a redemptive story arc requires good acting. Good acting would probably be contra-indicative. The movie is intended to provoke a negative response in the viewer. Clearly in your case it worked.

Is this supposed to be GOOD movies...or movies that were a huge part of culture? Because if its the latter then Titanic and Blazing Saddles absolutely belong on the list. As would a bunch of other shitty movies like Austin Powers and Breakfast at Tiffany's.

Needs more Jodorowsky. Keep Blue Velvet though. Substitute Wall-E for Toy Story. Rob Reiner has at least three movies worth seeing more than When Harry Met Sally (Misery, Stand By Me, The Princess Bride). Oh, Groundhog Day over Ghostbusters? And many other dubious picks...

I get into the Wall-e vs Toy Story argument literally everyday with my roommate (obviously we are very popular with the ladies) and i am on the Wall-e side. I honestly think that Wall-e was the best movie that came out last year. Better than the Wrestler, better than Slumdog, better than Milk. I don't remember the last movie that hit me that hard, and when you consider the visuals and its ability to appeal to all ages. True Toy Story was all of those things in its time. I feel that Toy Story was the breakout, Wall-e was the pinnacle.

Wall-E begins in a dialogless dystopia as frightening as Eraserhead and ends in an homage to Kubrick's 2001. For kids! Otherwise, I wouldn't consider any Pixar film for a "100" list. Even though they are nice when your chilling with your nephew.

Back to the Future and Ghostbusters clearly should be on any top 100. And I'm sure I'm on an island, but my favorite Pixar movie was The Incredibles. And I wouldn't have a problem throwing that in a top 100.

As since I'm in the mood to further alienate myself, Enter the Dragon isn't bad, but if I was going to put a kung fu movie on, I'd rather see 36th Chamber of Shaolin or Shogun Assassin. OR if you want a specifically Bruce Lee movie, Fist of Fury.

Alright, that's enough nerdy for one day.
