SNL: Just The Funny Parts: Paul Rudd Naked!
Paul Rudd hosted SNL! And for some reason, Justin Timberlake showed up to try and steal some of the spotlight even though he has nothing to promote except his ability to, while doing absolutely nothing else in his life except going to restaurants with Jessica Biel, memorize things. (That's probably not fair, fine, I just wish Timberlake had chosen that sad Michael Phelps episode in which to rear his irrelevant head.) Every moment of screentime needed more Rudd in it, not less. After the jump, the funniest parts:

When this first came on I was like "Yes!" and then I felt like some sort of weird old lady pervert cougar type person, and then I decided I'm fine with that. That is the power of Paul Rudd.

Justin Timberlake as the dancer was the highlight for me. Sorry, Paul Rudd. Because Justin in a one-piece and heels.

I can think of at least three things funnier in that episode than either Sproingo and the Beyonce sketch. Did you really think those were among the show's best?

What? Ok, yeah, the laughs in the sketch were cheap, but they were also very funny. Also, the dancer sketch. I laughed really hard at the "dance biscuits" line, and, oh my god, I just noticed that they're wearing heels. Awesome. This was a good episode.

The funniest part of the episode was clearly when Paul Rudd located his missing cell phone and realized it was on vibrate.

Paul Rudd was amazing as always and there was something so great about the music during the "everyone's a critic" sketch. it was perfect.
But ugh, Justin. I'll give him the Beyonce sketch, but SNL in two minutes was obnoxious.

The "Everyone's A Critic" bordered on being just as unfunny as most other Digital Shorts, if not for the whole "not actually gay, but almost" tone of the short, preceded by the kissing family sketch before that. I can't believe I watched the same type of joke for almost 10 minutes.

VampiresSuck is OTM, Beyonce was the only thing worth watching on this show. I'm really starting to get pissed off at how mediocre it's becoming. Seriously, you guys, it's 2k8.11. Naked men are not funny anymore. Semi- or naked men ceased being funny after that Chippendales sketch, at which point it should have been retired. How was the Beyonce sketch funny, exactly? Oh right, get it, the dancers are MEN. MEN WEARING LITTLE CLOTHING. LOLOLOL. Wait, they're supposed to be attractive women, but instead it's MEN. WHOA. How fucking simple-minded.
Anyway, besides B killing it on stage, the only parts of this show worth watching were the Biden open and Weekend Update. The kissing family was alright.
UGH SNL.

I thought the best part was the short film with Rudd, Bill Hader, and Fred Armisen, near the end of the episode. It seemed to hew closest to the goofy, absurdist type of stuff that Rudd has done in his work with the Stella crew.

Well, that's why it was the last sketch of the night. They usually plug those "conceptual" sketches near the end of the show. Funny, but not necessarily funny "ha ha."

I'm not a fan of Fred Armisen's, so that doesn't help me. This reminded me of the "Wine & Cigarettes" short from a few weeks back that was even more of a long shot concept.

You know me, I'm a huge SNL fan and one of the show's staunchest defenders/apologists. However, the tone of this weekend's show was really off-putting. Between all of the overwhelming violence (three segments ended with death, only one of which was offscreen) and the multiple instances of weirdly positioned "gay" jokes (I think their intent was to be critical of the passing of Prop 8 in CA, but the execution left a lot to be desired), it was the single most bizarre and uncomfortable episode of SNL that I can ever remember watching.
That said, the Armisen/Hader/Rudd sketch was pure brilliance. Anyone know who the "Noah" in "A Movie By Fred, Bill & Noah" is?

The whole self-deprecation thing in "Everybody's a Critic" would be a whole lot funnier if I wasn't 100% sure Andy Samberg thinks he's THE GREATEST PERSON IN THE WORLD.

I thought I was the only one who was surprised by the violence. That said, I thought the Everyone's a Critic sketch was hilarious. I didn't really think the humor was intentionally located in the idea that they're acting "kinda gay;" I thought they were moreso acting completely insane (the music?), and the turn the sketch takes at the midpoint is unexpected. SNL really can't win; when they're too safe, they're "not funny," and when they're surreal, they're "not funny." I'm a fan, and I think that the show is uneven at its worst.

I loved Everyone's a Critic. The 'almost gay' angle is amusing, but not really funny or cutting edge these days. But I definitely did not expect the climax of the skit. Hilariously done. Indy Jones + and Armisen's shotgun to the head had me dying.
also, I'm glad the dude from Bro Rape gets fair play on SNL. I personally prefer Derrick Comedy's Donald Glover to pretty much all of SNL's cast, though. He's a remarkable talent. I wish they would pick him up- he has to be on their radar by now, since he writes for 30 Rock, and fairly well-known in NY comedy scene. I think I even read that he auditioned. I don't understand why they wouldn't take him.
The clips I saw were pretty sweet. Rudd is the man. I love Justin Timberlake. Sasha Fierce is a beast.
