SNL Just The Funny Parts: Gerbils

thumbnail icon: SNL Just The Funny Parts: Gerbils

This was a great week for SNL on the musical guest front. I haven't been excited to see an SNL musical guest since I was fourteen, and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs did not disappoint (and in fact delighted. Spoiler alert: "Maps"!) The rest of the show was so-so, however, but not because of Zac Efron, who was actually pretty great. The whole time I was like "That very famous young man about whom I know three keywords and nothing else certainly has a sense of humor about his place in the world!" The funniest three sketches, after the jump.

3. The return of the Celebrity Blogger from bitchpleeze.com. (Yes, that URL is owned by NBC, though it would be cooler of them to do something with it). This one wasn't bad!:

2. Cool Bar. It's like the saloon in Kid Nation:

1. High School Musical 4: an almost perfect sketch."When you sing to yourself in bed...people can hear you!":

(Nope, no Gilly. Gilly is the worst. Gilly must die.) But the best part of the show was the Yeah Yeah Yeahs! Stereogum has the video of both performances. (Next week on SNL: The Best Of Amy Poehler!)

The saloon from Kid Nation was the first thing I thought of too. I miss Kid Nation :(

The first bitchpleeze was way funnier. A skit that isn't making the rounds on the blogs was the "junk mail" fake advertisement, which is possibly one of the most subversive and relevant sketches in years.

Junk mail was pretty good as was the High School Musical sketch (weak ending though), but for my money, the biggest laughs were Jon Bovi (who always make me laugh) and the foot rub sketch.

Bitch please isn't so good.

as an advocate for Will Forte singing: Jon Bovi... also this was the worst show they did in a while. The world had two of the best episodes of two of the most best shows last night in Tim&Eric, and in Xavier Renegade Angel... please cover those more and not sketches about High School Musical

Gilly is terrible. Bitch Pleeze was funny, if only because that's how I imagine a lot of celebrity bloggers/commentators acting in real life.

Also funny: the last skit involving Jason Sudeikis sucking Zac Efron's foot.

really? the "I am your mother" sketch killed. It was classic SNL. watching the celebrity blogger bit was painful and a much better representation of how things are on the show nowadays. and whats up with casey wilson? can someone kick her the fuck off? she's god-awful.

eeesh.

I know that Gilly is really stupid and pointless and annoying, but even while recognizing that, I can't stop myself from laughing at it.

The last sketch was by far the best. Jason Sudeikis sucking on Zac Efron's toes? Gold.

i know it's terrible, but there's something oddly hypnotic about the Gilly skits. They're not very funny at all, but there's like some vague untapped vein of broad overdone cheap physical humor in em.

why didn't yyy's get to close out the show? and i love maps, but don't they like at least two songs on their new album? odd choice.

YES to Jon Bovi. I never laughed so hard. Sudeikis is too often relegated to emcee and straight man roles, and he's too talented for that (exhibit a: the foot sketch that closed the show). I have to say, I'm a giant Wiig fan, so that's coloring this a little: this Gilly sketch was WAAAY tighter than that first one, which went on forever and wasn't funny except for Wiig. This Gilly was kinda a lot better. Casey Wilson gets a bad rap; I feel like she's just not in much. I thought it was a good episode! And that direct mail sketch was very, very smart and awesome.

the best sketch was the "i am your mother!!!" sketch. omg i laughed so hard they nailed it! the hsm one was cool and bitchpleeze was hilarious too. please please please kill gilly, its boring and not deserving of the wiig.

"I am your mother" sketch was sooo funny. It was refreshing since most "funny" moments on the show only translate to "funny by current SNL standards," but that was genuiinely hilarious. Fred Armisen is the most consistently great cast member they have right now.

Also, I've never felt strongly one way or the other about the YYYs, but does Karen O's stage presence bother anyone else? She seemed so self-important

Yeah, I laughed the most at the "I AM YOUR MOTHER" sketch. I still feel like they could of tightened it up a bit more. It also freaked me out because Fred actually looked and sounded like my mother in that sketch...

That Gilly sketch was the first time I've ever been overwhelmingly compelled to fast forward. Usually I can at least tolerate a bad sketch until it's done, but I hit my breaking point.

You wanna know why the show wasn't very wonderful? Bill Hader did ONE FUCKING THING ALL NIGHT. It's like they have no idea what comedic genius they have. Yes, Kristen Wiig is VERY talented, but just by throwing her in every sketch doesn't make up for the fact that they're completely abandoning Bill Hader.

The Foot Rub sketch, Jon Bovi and the Junk Mail ad were better than the three up there.

I kind of resent that SNL is obviously trying to manufacture popularity by pushing super-contrived quotes like "bitch pleeze." The way she looks at the camera is SO "Feel free to use this one amongst your peers, 18-25 year olds!"

Cool Bar was funny though they missed a really great opportunity to use PEARL.

"Whats so scary about Connecticut? You lose your tennis tacket in a Pottery Barn? BITCH PLEEEZEEE"

Hands down best SNL line in a long time.

I felt like the writers didn't give a crap this week and just recycled every unpopular concept. Gilly? Blech! Bitch Pleeze? Blech! Jon Bovi? Blech!!

HSM4 and "I am your mother!" FTW!

Yes, Gilly was the absolute worst thing ever! Kristin Wiig can be funny. But when she is not she is reeeeeeeally not fun AT ALL. My boyfriend and I actually made disgusted noises at the TV.

Jon Bovi and Gilly need to die of flagellation with a piece of foam rubber.....just beat them softly into the ground and keep beating them slowly and surely until they die. i dont care if it takes years, lock those skits into a back room with a gimp and just beat them as slow as possible so they can experience the pain we are put through.... Sudekis and Wiig are soooo much better than this (Will Forte isn't....this is all will forte does, put on a funny mustache and sing....not funny) STOP MAKING THESE REOCCURRING SKITS JUST FUCKING STOOOPPPPP

I thought this was a strong episode. Jon Bovi was indeed pretty funny. Forte, Hader, Wiig, Armisen sell even weak jokes really well, in everything. Lindsay, we are SNL appreciation opposites!

My thoughts on this show:

1. YEAH YEAH YEAHS!!! And they even played an old one! Yippee!

2. I'm glad you guys reminded me of the "I AM YOUR MOTHER!!!" sketch. That was probably my favorite.

3. Zac Efron was not bad. And I thought I wouldn't be able to stand him. That was nice.

4. Jason Sudeikis putting Zac Efron's foot in his mouth = BLOW MY MIND. I thought for sure I would see that in this post.

5. I'm actually going to disagree with most of you and say that the Gilly sketch was mildly amusing. But that had nothing (NOTHING) (NOTHING) to do with Kristen Wiig. Specifically, it had to do with Kenan Tomphson and Bobby Moynihan. They were the only two things combating the horribleness of Wiig's character. On that note, so Gilly is a recurring character now? Shit.

6. Is it just me, or does Zac Efron bear a sudden odd resemblance to Cillian Murphy? No? It is just me? Good.
