Saturday Night Live: Madonna Barfs The Torch To Lady Gaga

thumbnail icon: Saturday Night Live: Madonna Barfs The Torch To Lady Gaga

Watching Saturday Night Live on the West Coast is ridiculous. It's like watching THE PAST. Is everything like that out here? Living your life three hours behind THE ACTUAL WORLD. Just kidding, I know that time is a relative human construct. But you know what else is a relative human construct? The Internet. And you could basically know all of the wonderful surprises (hah) of Saturday Night Live ahead of time if you wanted, just by logging in (we all still "log in" to the Internet, right? Hello? Mr. AOL?). Not that you need a SPOILER ALERT to figure out that Ryan Reynolds is a weirdo! What a weird dude. He's the epitome of a Plastic Face. "But he was a good sport." Sure, if the sport is Not Moving Your Face Very Much And Being Too Smugball. Not that it matters, since apparently Lady Gaga actually hosted the show? She was in so many sketches! She wrestled Madonna for some reason, in a sketch that has to have been the seven least funny minutes in SNL history (and there have been literally hundreds of unfunny minutes!). And apparently http://twitter.com/sethmeyers21/status/4596539780 is talking about her musical performances as well. Sure.

My favorite part of the show was this sketch:

Although I thought there was a lot of unintentional (or was it very tentional?) comedy in Lady Gaga dressed like an '80s businessman's Sharper Image desk toy, perhaps given to him by a secretary, or a mistress.

She was going to dress up like oil wave rectangle gadget, or clacky silver balls on strings, but the Hammacher Schlemmer Impossible Costumes Shop was closed. (Sharper Image and Hammacher Schlemmer jokes in the same post? The World's Best Redundant!)

Also, "something you keep for a long time: secrets" should probably be a catch-phrase. Who do I talk to about that? There must be some physician at a Botox clinic in Venice who works nights as a Catch-Phrase Judge. (Huh? It's not my fault California is so weird!)

Six minutes in that thing and the crew couldn't manage an 'accidental' wardrobe decapitation?

Throughout that Madonna/Lady Gaga sketch, notice how pretty quiet the audience was? I spent that whole time thinking "whomever acting as Madonna really got the horrible arms/mummy look down. It's downright creepy." Then when you realize that it was actually her, you couldn't help but saying "yikes".

My personal favourite part of the show was Lady Gaga being all "I'm a New Yorker! Gray's Payapa! Yankees!" cause I like to imagine her dressed like she always is dressed (like a fucking idiot) and being mocked mercilessly. Also cause she is clearly an outer borough NYU arts student who for some reason people are paying attention to.

Not to be all BBCgum around here, but that Norwegian Actors' Guild Playhouse thing seems like a conceit straight out of That Mitchell & Webb look (also, a notable example of a sketch show that isn't a giant blind lumpy mess falling all over itself, barfing up recycled zeitgiest all over everything) - when they do those 'show written by guys who know nothing about the topic'.

I thought the Family Feud sketch was hilarious. The jokes were kind of obvious ("Things you do with your dad!"), but Bill Hader knows how to do creepster so well.

Jason Sudeikis really needs to work on his Richard Dawson impression. There wasn't enough of him inappropriately touching the ladies and drunkenly slurring.

Bill Hader has literally hoisted the show upon his back this year like the Atlas statue outside 30 Rock (or near 30 Rock? I saw it from a tour bus once). I actually thought most of the show was pretty funny, save the weird Madonna/Lady Gaga anticomedy.

I thought there would be more comments on the harsh Obama opening. Armison practically dropped his impression just to better drive home the point. For a show that has unabashedly loved him in the past, this is quite a swing. Et tu, SNL?

Lady Gaga is annoying and ubiquitous (and therefore an easy target), but she also writes all of her own songs. You can't say that about very many (any?) pop stars today. So although her "Club Hitz" are pretty awful and shallow, she does have a stitch of talent. She's also, like, 23.
I'm going to come out of the closet and say I have actually heard her entire album, and it does stray off the path of horrendous from time to time. There is actually a hidden gem or two in there.
On the other hand, fuck that chick.

I know that new girl on SNL with the potty-mouth is a friend of Gabe's and all, but the whole concept of SNL to me is so stale, that when someone asks me if I watched it (as someone just did yesterday), it's like they're asking me if I watched General Hospital. The whole hook of this show is that it was supposed to be outrageous and freewheelin' because of it being live and weekly, so it could react right away to the shite-geist. I know another commenter already said it, but you can find better standup comedy any night of the week in any metropolitan area. SNL should go away, someone pull the plug. Sorry. I don't mean to be such an internet hater, but come on. Madonna? Lady Gaga? Andy Samberg? No a thousand times no. At least in the olden daze GE Smith would reliably show up on commercial breaks and scare the pants off you with his reptilian face and dead marble eyes. Scary shit. Oh... I didn't realize I left this thing running, sorry.
