SNL Just The Funny Parts: Even Tim McGraw's Enthusiasm Couldn't Save This One
What happened this week, SNL? Has the post-election hangover really set in, with a Justin Timberlake ace already played? Were you scared to try anything interesting after blog criticism of last week's "gay" episode? Or, worst-case, did you think that because of Saturday's guests, no smart people would be watching? Because that would be really cynical. Tim McGraw was great -- too bad the writing wasn't. There only were three funny parts on this week's show. Video after the jump.
3. This is described as "James Bond gets a visit from trailer trash," which is weird because the entire point seems to be to show how silly James Bond movies are. (Incidentally, how much like Skeletor does Kristen Wiig look in this screencap? Because of the pixelation, not because she looks like Skeletor.)
2. On the first day of Videogum I asked "Is anyone else obsessed with Dateline's Keith Morrison?" Finally, an answer! Bill Hader did a perfect impression in what I think was this week's best moment (though it goes on a little too long.) Please, America, get on the Keith Morrison bandwagon:
1. And here's the funniest sketch, and the one going around online -- Rahm Emmanuel speaks his mind. Unfortunately, it's online-only and didn't air on the show, raising all kinds of "Why can't they make the whole plane out of the black box?" sorts of questions:
The next show is December 6 with John Malkovich as host. Hopefully after a break the show will come back with their A-game. Or at least Britney Spears.

Yes! Yes, I am obsessed with Keith Morrison. What a lecherous effing weirdo!
Along the same lines, W-ABC in New York does a "Protect our Children" PSA during their news broadcasts. It always shows a picture of a missing child, and a voiceover says, "Have you seen [name]?" The guy who does the voiceover always used to say it in this extremely inappropriate and suggestive way (this doesn't do it justice but it was all I could find). Anyway, obviously someone spoke to him about it, because now his tone is much more sedate.

lets take a moment and just shine in the wonderous performances Will Forte offered us this week: Zel Miller endorsing Saxby Chambliss because he has a funny name, Forte nailed at becoming completely inane with that list... also the escaped mental patient at the Thanksgiving dinner he was absolutlo great in... I mean I agree (did you say this?) that Hader is making the show great, but Forte is vastly under appreciated (ie see Brothers Solomon)
Score = 3
the rahm emanuel sketch is every type of brilliant... too bad they didn't air it, because outside of the arianna huffington impression, the episode sucked.
i love that samberg worked in rahm's dark eye circles and sandwich hand mannerisms... see picture:

also - rahm emanuel could stamp my ticket anyday.

i thought the episode was pretty funny actually, it started slow, but the forte skits were genius. maybe it's because it seemed like andy samberg was barely in the show, and less andy equals better snl. also, the last skit of the night was hilarious, "why is this bar so sticky, it's like 50,000 post-it notes without any helpful reminders" yeah it went on a little long and had a bad ending but there were some good lines.

I second the bartender sketch - Tim McGraw stunk it up, but Bobby Moynihan was pretty great at throwing breakaway bottles at the wall. I was drunk though, my judgment may be questionable.

Yeah, the crowd was exceptionally dead for this episode, but there were a handful of things that had me laughing at home. In addition to the above sketches, I really like Bobby Moynihan's character for some strange reason, and the Zell Miller and Ariana Huffington bits of Update were funny. Hell, I kind of liked that silly, slight prank phone calls sketch too.

Oh, I forgot to mention that while I appreciate that Will Forte does something well, whatever it is he does annoys the shit out of me and never makes me laugh. I'm sorry. I know he's talented, it just doesn't work for me.
Score = -3
Then the problem is you, not Will Forte, who for roughly the last seven years, has been the best, most original, cast member on the show.

You know what, I hear a small trace of Samberg does Wahlberg in that impersonation.

I don't know. I think SNL has been consistently funny for the last year or so. Besides 30 Rock, and maybe HIMYM...what other show on TV makes you laugh out loud every week? There's always a skit or two that I want to watch again the next day.

I thought Tim McGraw did a great job considering he seems like a tool otherwise.

ARRRGH! Hulu AGAIN! Isn't this stuff on anything that can be played outside the US????

Oh ya oh YA - The Hader/ Keith Morrison was great.
Comedy doesn't usually get FUNNIER the next day, but that is.... Just try it out, right now, doing the "OHHHHHHHH" with your eyes real wide, and see if you can't keep from laughing.... ha ha ha ha ha ha. CLASSIC comedy, go Hader go.
