How I Met Your Mother: New York Versus New Jersey

thumbnail icon: How I Met Your Mother: New York Versus New Jersey

So, remember the episode about how everyone hated Staten Island? This one was like that, but with New Jersey. Ted and Stella have somehow been engaged for weeks without ever having a single discussion about whether they'll live in NYC or NJ when they get married, which is a testament to how shallow, low-stakes, and disposable all of Ted's relationships have been. Which is why we don't care. Nobody cares. The biggest How I Met Your Mother fan in the whole world doesn't care about the predictable, solve-able, and wholly external problems the characters on this show face in their relationships. Because it's a sitcom, and it's not Friends. BUT this episode, despite its cheesy Springsteen montage and plot-thickening devices, did have its moments. And the best one came courtesy once again of the great Jason Segel delivering a monologue:

After Ted and Stella got in a fight about New York vs. New Jersey, Marshall finally spoke up. Also, there was a subplot where Barney kept being denied fistbumps, so that's what that part is:

I love the way they're using Jason Segel this season. Last week, after his crazy hamburger ode scene, we found out that he got a job at a bank and was no longer unemployed. But they're still letting his character become more and more bitter and old and grumpy, and he's the best thing this show has going for it lately. Also, Robin is moving to Japan, but we know she's not really, because of the goat!

God. This episode was so awful and wholly unfunny. The gag with the fist pound was pathetic. The 24 parody is like two years too late. The fact that Ted could decide to move to NJ based solely on reading a book to Stella's kid is borderline at best. The Segel monologue was fantastic, but that shouldn't be the highlight of a comedy show.
"Two and a Half Men" was infinitely funnier last night. And that's a sentence that should never be typed. NO MORE FREE RIDES, HIMYM!

http://tinyurl.com/43rkkr Hey, you don't have to be tall to knock shit over at a bodega. I did it today, and I'm well under 5'5". Bodegas just have too much crap in them!

Yeah, the Marshall freak-out was the best part— Apatow boys always do the freak-out so well! Oh, and Barney dressing like a lesbian in the beginning. So, 2 points out of a possible 42. I feel like the HIMYM writers got sick of all the fact-checking and digging that us uber-fans did last year trying to remain one step ahead of them (ex: the weird framed diploma thing), instead of focusing on the funny. So, this year, they were like, “Screw it. Let’s do it like the Simpsons. Everything blows up at the end of one episode and the next one starts like nothing happened, but when it is convenient, we’ll turn a minor character’s drinking problem or death into an on-going subplot.”
Oh, and Lindsay, good call on the Robin/goat thing!

HIMYM was quite not good last night. Here's my question, though: when does Worst Week get an "Operation Watch This"? Matt Lynch & Nick Kroll guest starred last night! Plus, more grumpy Kurtwood Smith minus the idiot "'70s Show" kids!

I meant Matt Walsh. Not Matt Lynch (who's Matt Lynch)?

as soon as Ted admitted to moving to Jersey, I immediately figured that Robin would just move into his place (I mean they've lived there for a while, so the rent's got to be some cheaper, right?). Then when it was revealed that she's moving to Japan, I just figured that she'll go over for a bit and get homesick and have no where to live thus bringing it back to living at Ted's place.
I mean Ted's apartment does have two bedrooms and someday Lily and Marshall WILL have to move into their slantsville place, so even if it ends up that they're living there together, why does it ever have to mean they're TOGETHER?
Sorry..this has been bugging me for a while and videogum has now got the bulk of it. I apologize.
