(This week, we're highlighting some of our favorite Videogum posts / video-related moments of 2008. So that's why things look different, and are old, this week. And Happy Almost New Year!)

I've watched this eight times, and I still can't tell if it's real:
The YouTube info says it aired in the early '90s, but the YouTube info could say it was made by aliens and it would mean just as much, and there doesn't seem to be much about it on the rest of the internet. It looks like the early '90s, and when you think about it, real or not, that number is a genius idea -- why bother with the psychic nonsense, just skip straight to the crying that's going to happen anyway. Or, wait, does what you hear when you call the number actually MAKE you cry? Is this a Jesus thing? It would actually be just like '90s televangelists to charge $2/minute to hear the gospel. In the absence of further information, I'm just going to imagine there's a guy out there who calls his mansion "The house that crying built."

Uh. OK. Well, first let's address what this movie did well, like the disappointed parents we are (or at least that I am), recognizing that the negative feedback won't be useful or constructive if it isn't preceded by something positive....

Maybe they tell you that they're going to kill a loved one?

This video was definitely a memorable highlight from Videogum 2008. Also, now that I watch this video again, isn't it possible that this movie could be made into some lame The Ring/Grudge rip-off. You know, you answer the phone, you cry, and then seven days later you die or something. Jokes!

They did. It's called One Missed Call.

I've worked in the 900 number business since the late 80's and I never saw this ad, but that doesn't mean it isn't legit.
