The Dance Dance Revolution Will Be Televised
The New York Times published an article yesterday addressing the recent spate of dance competition shows. There's MTV's America's Best Dance Crew, which starts its second season on June 19th, Bravo's Step It Up & Dance, which just ended, So You Think You Can Dance, Celebrity Dance Club, My Wife Dances For Money, Do You Dance Better Than A Monkey?, Dance or Fight, and Look Who's Dancin'. The article was all about how dance has seen this huge resurgence in popularity, and everyone wants to be a "street dancer." Which is fair, everyone should want to be a street dancer. Street dancers are the best. But this quote from America's Best Dance Crew creator and American Idol judge Randy Jackson is not the best:
"People come up to me all the time and say, 'I thought this was only for people in the 'hood,' but the show prompts kids from all over the country to go to their computer and learn."
Who is going up to him and saying "I thought this was only for people in the hood"? Stop doing that. Stop going up to him and saying that. That is ridiculous. I also like that Randy Jackson thinks you should go to your computer and learn. Learn how to dance. Yes. That is where all the best physical activities are mastered.

Sadly, I know what group that is in the picture: Jabberwaky [sp?], the winner of the first season of America's Best Dance Crew (and, arguably, the best of the dance shows).
While I ended up not watching it to the end because I was sick of one group getting the votes to stay despite not being that good, I think it's the best of the dance shows because it's about taking groups and having them take themes and adapt them to their style. It's not about watching celebs (or "real" dancers who will never get fame for dancing) do pas-a-doubles around the floor, it's about street crews just doing their thing and having to adapt their styles to (sometimes stupid) themes. You don't need to be a dance expert to watch the show and enjoy it.
