MTV Is Throwing An Inaugural Ball For Barack Obama For Some Reason

On January 20th, Barack Obama will be sworn in as the first African-American president in American history, so the channel that produces The Hills, NeXt, From G's to Gents, and Parental Control will be there for some reason! From the AP:

The network announced Tuesday that it will host the "Be the Change Inaugural Ball" at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in Washington on Jan. 20. The event will be televised live across MTV's many channels and platforms, including MTV and MTV.com.

The Viacom Inc.-owned network said the event will feature leading artists, celebrities and government officials. To celebrate the large youth voter turnout in the election, hundreds of young people will be chosen to attend based on their demonstrated volunteerism.

I like that young people will be in attendance in celebration of the large youth voter turnout in the election, NOT because young people are the only people who care about an MTV party. If it hadn't been for that large youth voter turnout in the election, MTV would have gone ahead with the inaugural ball, but it would have been 45+ at the door.

All of the excitement that accompanied being a part of this election has created a sense that we're part of history. We can't all dedicate our new fragrance to Obama, but it's the type of momentous event that you will be able to tell younger generations about. A misty-eyed story of how you remember the world before Barack Obama, and how you proudly cast your ballot to elect him. But if, in that distant future, your inspirational story concludes with "and then I want to the MTV Inaugural Ball, and it was totally chill. Tia Carrere was so drunk!" your vote does not count. And you are in space jail.
