The MTV Movie Awards: Just The Funny Parts

Last night's MTV Movie Awards were weird, because much of the two-hour paid advertisement for upcoming blockbusters (like the Sandra Bullock/Ryan Reynolds rom com The Proposal. JK.) was ACTUALLY FUNNY. (And we just knew KEYBOARD CAT was gonna show up.) I actually felt like I was watching it because I wanted to and not just out of some lame desire to keep abreast of what the kids are doing. But that said, it seems unlikely that the kids themselves -- the actual coveted youth demographic, had any idea what was going on. They were probably just like "Twilight! Kiss, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, kiss!" Here's video of the six funniest moments, (I can't believe there were six!), with more in the photo gallery.

6. Bruno puts his butt in Eminem's face; Eminem stomps off. This was clearly set up beforehand, but it's fun to pretend it wasn't:

5. Andy Samberg's Twilight: New Moon spoof:

4. The Show Opener starring Andy Samberg and Justin Timberlake. I wasn't aware that The Reader was so big with the MTV audience:

3. LeeAnn Rimes, Chris Isaak (!) and Forest Whitaker do a medley of Lonely Island/Andy Samberg songs:

2. Cool Guys Don't Look At Explosions. So true:

1. Kristen Stewart Drops Her Moon Man Popcorn Thing:

Oops, I think we have to kind of like her now. Damn!

I'd correct you on it not being a moonman, but I don't really care.

I was at a meme costume party last night, and right before we left someone @'d me on twitter that keyboard cat made her appearance on the MTV Movie Awards, so I checked the DVR and got it on my flip video to show people at the party. Video of that. (The cat is a girl)

Congratulations, Brad, on the enduring success of Keyboard Cat. 2 Questions which you may have already answered a thousand times: Question the first - Do you have an actual relationship with Keyboard Cat (was this filmed by you or someone you know, or is it found footage)? You don't have to answer that one if you think it will ruin the mystique. 2. Have you found any way to capitalize off of this? Dare I suggest a Keyboard Cat thermos/lunchbox?

I had a feeling my first comment would get thumbed down (and also this one) but there's like two commenters on videogum I thought would appreciate it. Anyway: The cat video was filmed before I was born by Charlie Schmidt and was called "Cool Cat Playing the Keys." I just repurposed it as a visual fail tag and gave it the "Play Him Off, Keyboard Cat" title. BUT ALSO, after about a month of inactivity I noticed a light spike in traffic and backlinks from forums, and a handful of parodies. It had about 40k views. So I tracked down Charlie Schmidt and got his permission to place ads on the video (I specifically told him it was likely to become a meme, and that I'd link to his site to drive a lot of traffic to him). Then I bugged a YouTube editor friend of mine for a few weeks until he featured it. Which got it up to about 100k views, then it was cold for a few weeks, then the parodies and press hit critical mass and it started getting around 40k views a day. My original video has like 1.6 million views right now and I've made a couple hundred bucks off of it so far. But someone just contacted me on Friday about licensed merch which I'd split with Charlie. (Sorry I'm using the comments as keyboardcatgum)

I think the Twilight kids were my favorite part, they so didn't want to be there. It made me wonder if they were got roped into a low-paying contract that included them for all three (five? seven? how many books?) movies and didn't realize it would blow up. They didn't seem too happy about their situation at all. Especially Kristen Stewart! I like when her and Edward (what's his name?) won for best kiss, and the hosts knew his name off the top of their heads, and then paused, leaned into the note card, and read her name awkwardly, and she kind of threw her hands in the air. She was great. I want to be friends with her. But I don't want to see Twilight.

When Roger Ebert defended calling the line about money from Mamet's Heist -- "Everybody needs money! That's why they call it money!" -- one of the funniest ever written (and I'd agree), he quoted Louis Armstrong as saying, "There are some folks that, if they don't know, you can't tell 'em.''

So, is that would Roger Ebert would quote to me about keyboard cat?

Max the King of All Wild Things

Maybe I'm as old as Gabe, but I found most of this show to be fuckong painful. There were funny parts, but it was trying SO hard. Also, they should have just let the Lonely Island guys do the songs. The actual music is half what makes them good.

Also, the show made me realize how much I hate Twilight. It's a lot.

Okay, I'll end my rant. I just feel weird that I seem to be the only one who still wants the Mtv awards to die. Maybe even a bit more.

My younger sibling and his friends watch Mtv like it's their job (hey, it's your grandma, making jokes) and they think it's just perfect. I, being at 24 and one half years of age, I am just out of that 18-24 demographic they pander to... and after watching the above clips, feel more than okay with being Too Old for Mtv.
