Newsbusted: Oh Look, It's Another Attempt At A Conservative Daily Show

thumbnail icon: Newsbusted: Oh Look, It's Another Attempt At A Conservative Daily Show

Look, there are plenty of absurd things to make fun of on both the left and the right, which is why The Daily Show itself, which is commonly assumed to have a left wing bias, doesn't let democrats off the hook for their silliness, either. But as any nine year old with a video camera knows, news parodies are much, much harder than they look, and this week they get to look even more excruciatingly impossible with the advent of the twice-weekly podcast Newsbusted, "Fake news from the right," by the conservative site Breitbart. And like the other sad attempts at conservative news parody before it, it's Bush league. Don't worry about spitting your Obama Kool Aid all over the computer screen. It's safe.

Please note that this show's YouTube page instructs the user to "read the disclaimer" and realize that "the laugh track is part of the joke." Ahh, of course, the disclaimer! It wouldn't be a Conservative parody show without one. They might want to add "Not suitable for anyone with a sense of humor."

Agreed that conservative parodies tend to fall flat. But Daily Show is losing it in my eye. Stewart is becoming too much of a cheap shot artist. The quotes are ever more obviously cut short and out of context. Colbert is much better at being even handed and makes his point better. You can see he actually thinks about the counter arguments so his arguments are more thought out, not just,'"Scarborough's and asshole!" (which maybe he is but still, that's not an argument.) Colbert never gets in to bully mode like Stewart.

When Colbert talks about supporting the troops you know it's sincere. The shows in Iraq were hilarious and he still challenged the audience. He went off on "Don't ask Don't Tell" and I'd be willing to bet most soldiers disagree with his position. But he does it in fun and they know he's still on their side.

Evenhandedness just shows that you have the confidence in your opinion to actually address the arguments of the other side. Stewart is a comedian sure but he forgets that and goes full on "fuck you Cramer/Santorelli/Scarborough/whoever!" and forgets to actually tell jokes. I still like Daily Show but I watch it more for John Oliver and the gang than Stewart now.

I disagree with all of my favorite comedians politically (Cross/Oswalt/CK/Galifianakis) but so what. If they tell a good joke I laugh even if I disagree with the political point. But "Bush is an asshole" just isn't a joke. Setting up straw men just isn't as funny as making your point with a joke the way Colbert does.

Sure if it's a punch line to an actual joke. It's doesn't take any kind of wit to just insult someone. Norm MacDonald could pull it off. He used to make "OJ is a murderer" and "Michael Jackoson is a child molester" hilarious. But he set it up, cuz he's a good comedian. Stewart is funny, he can do better than the no brainer cheap shots.

colbert is a lot funnier than jon stewart. jon stewart's a one trick pony. well, more like five tricks.

1. play a clip of a politician saying some cuh-raaaazy, do an awkward pause while looking into the camera, then say something feeble and awkward. big laughs!
2. do the new yorker douche-bag voice as an impression for everything.
3. pra in terms of negative space. everything around the president is cuh-raaaaazy (or as gabe and lindsay would put it, the worst! lololol) while the president is the straight man in the national comedy routine of america. fox news, crazy. joe biden, crazy. the president, the poor guy that has to clean up the mess everyone's making. si se puedej!
4. crack up at how crappy a joke goes over and expect the audience to find it funny too......it's not jon. it's not.
5. say something that's not necessarily funny, but something that the studio audience agrees with, thus inspiring clapter. Clapter: when your jokes aren't funny, just pander to the crowd with a political point of view they agree with, and you'll be fine.

Pcbower (...sir) a single up vote won't do much so I'm gonna go out there and say it. This guys saying some good criticisms! Like, stop knee jerk down voting what you think is knee jerk conservatism. Guys!

Stewart definitely doesn't have the finesse of Colbert. And what Colbert said about don't ask don't tell was real-talk that I wouldn't be surprised if it made some folk reflect on the issue for a minute. While Stewart is still relatively funny, he's mostly embraced the label the Fox pundits have given him now and a fair amount of his show is just him responding to why they shouldn't even be caring about a fake news program. But yeah, Colbert = real-talk.

colbert has the incredible challenge of making his (liberal) points from the vantage of a (conservative) fool. i think the constraints of his character impose a degree of self sensorship ensuring his logical credibility. the arguments are ultimately made in the viewers minds, and yes it is possible to force an oppinion indirectly, (montage), but there are usually at least elements of real dialogue with colbert.

"Themaswella(? That's what I heard, at least) prosecuters have charged a local broadcast company with financial misconduct after they ran a program critical of the government.

Or, as Democrats in this country call it, 'the Fairness Doctrine'"

That's what we're calling programs critical of the government now? It's so hard to keep up with PC speak.

Also, it's a good thing she clarified "democrats in this country", because the Albanian Democratic Party is also well known for pushing the fairness doctrine, so that joke could have been really confusing.

The great thing about doing political humour is that you can always deflect any criticisms of it by getting into contentious political discussions:

"What's that? Our hostess mumbles and fidgets like she doesn't want to be there? Well, how can you ignore the obvious left-wing bias of the American media?"
