Bromance makes me wish that I was smarter. I know that Liz Lemon and Jack Donaghy say that graduate students are the worst, but if I was better at critical thinking and dialectical argumentation, I would totally go back to school just in order to write a PhD thesis about this show and its incredibly complicated treatment of modern American masculinity.
I am not joking.
The premise, of course, is that Brody Jenner is looking for a new best friend. So nine dudes from around the country have flown to LA to live in a rundown frat-party-styled house to compete for his platonic affection. In the first episode, the one gay contestant left because he didn't really want to meet Brody so much as be on an episode of The Hills, and then a particular conversation in the kitchen about how much pussy everyone enjoyed getting seemed to be too much for him, which is sort of fair enough, except that I find it hard to believe that a 20-something homosexual on an MTV reality show is actually that put off by what seems to be a typically inane hyper-sexualized conversation among a group of nine dudes trying desperately to ward off any questions of their own orientation/preference considering they're on national television basically trying to win the love of a man. But what was obviously the most ingenious and mind-blowing moment of the episode and probably the entire season was the elimination ceremony which took place in a hot tub, with Brody Jenner sitting on one side of the hot tub facing a line of shirtless men sitting knee-to-knee on the other side of the hot tub. Everyone who was safe from elimination was asked to leave the hot tub, upping the tension by putting Brody in a hot tub facing just three shirtless men, debating who he liked the best, and when the elimination occurred he then asked all the other boys to get BACK IN the hot tub to quote-unquote "party," for a moment that was basically 100 times more homoerotic and complicated and confusing than anything that's been on Bravo ever.
Please watch this highlight reel from last night's episode to get a sense of what I'm talking about:

Mark Wahlberg has been in the news a lot this week, not only because he stars in Whoops, The Happening, but also because he told a British interviewer that he was glad he didn't take a role he was offered in the Ocean's 11 movies:
"People tell George Clooney it's great, but we all know it sucked. I made two bad movies instead -- Planet of the Apes and The Truth About Charlie -- but doing that was better than sitting with Brad [Pitt] and George, telling the press how great everybody is! 'We were in Europe, George was funny, then we had some wine...' -- that's not for me."
Look out, Clooney. Looks like someone just built a chateau out of snaps on the picturesque Lake Ouch, and he's inviting you over for cocktails made with Hot Damn 100. Then Wahlberg was in the news again from the set of his new movie Max Payne, describing the character as "one of the edgier roles I've played but also the most layered." In case you are not a nerd, Max Payne is a videogame character.
So somehow this got me looking up YouTubes of Mark Wahlberg, and it's actually astonishing to see how much he's changed over the years when you actually look at footage of him in chronological order.

When it was announced last week that Whitney Port is getting her own MTV show, we all had a good laugh. Now we can all have a good cry. From The Hollywood Reporter:
The Hills co-star Brody Jenner is getting his own MTV series.
The network has committed to six episodes of Bromance, which has been buzzed about online recently. The show, from Ryan Seacrest's production company, will feature a group of "regular guys" who come to Hollywood and compete in a series of challenges from skydiving to dealing with the paparazzi -- in the hopes of ultimately being chosen by Jenner to become part of his entourage.
Along the way, contestants will be whittled down via "Hot Tub Elimination Ceremonies" after which rejected "bros" will be asked to leave the bachelor pad dripping wet in a swimsuit, luggage in hand. Bringing to mind various dating reality shows, contestants also will have shots at a "group date" and "alone time" with Jenner in every episode.
Out of all the people on The Hills, some of whom may or may not deserve any additional attention, Jenner is the least deserving of his own show. The most interesting thing about him is that he has his last name tattooed on his body in a Bam Margera font. And yet, I have to admit, I will watch Bromance (nullus). Mostly I just want to hear what the contestants tell their friends back home after they get eliminated. "I just never got enough alone time with Brody. Trevor was always interrupting us when we were trying to chill." Also HOT TUB ELIMINATION CEREMONIES? Amazing. "Please pack your dignity and go."

Here is a clip from the season finale of The Hills. SPOILER ALERT you're welcome.
Did they shoot this on a Walkman? You can always tell when it's getting "real" on this show because it suddenly stops looking like a movie about pretty robots taking over a planet made of candy.

I noted earlier the existence of the Adam Chu vs. Miley Cyrus YouTube dance off, but hadn't followed up for a few days. Sorry, I've been busy. In the meantime, a couple of rounds have gone by. I know this is going to sound stupid and naive, but the internet + young people = crazy. The power of Miley Cyrus's YouTube page could run a small village gated community. The Miley Cyrus response video has more than 3,000,000 views, and the Adam Chu response video is already up to 900k after four days. Both videos after the jump.
