Happy 40th Birthday, Sesame Street

In celebration of the 40th Anniversary of Sesame Street, here is a classic moment you probably (definitely?) remember from your childhood.

MEMORIES! You are so old, Sesame Street! I got you a cake, and I covered it in icing gravestones, that is how old you are. The oldest. R.I.P.

All these Sesame Street gangsta rap videos have gotten "Ante Up" permanently stuck in my head.

Man, it's only 40? I always thought that Sesame Street existed whilst waiting for TV to be invented.

Sesame Street pffft. Did you know it’s been more than 23 years since the awesomeness of Knight Rider and David Hasselhoff?

Now that’s educational television, my friends.

However shitty the world becomes, and however more horrifying media becomes, and however dumbed down our society gets, Sesame Street is always the same fun, beloved, educational source of kids' entertainment. If you don't love Sesame Street, your soul is dead and you don't deserve to look upon the genius that was Jim Henson anyway. You jerk.

I actually don't believe that latter-day Sesame Street is the same educational source of kids' entertainment that it was in the 70s or 80s. Not since the Elmo Coup, anyway. What I liked about Sesame Street was how maturely it treated kids. "Yo kids! Here are numbers! And also Spanish!" Now it's 40% Elmo baby-talking at kids. Maybe my main complaint is that I watched Sesame Street with my parents when I was a kid, but I am absolutely sure I wouldn't be able to stomach Elmo long enough to sit through an episode if/when I have kids.

Pre-Elmo Sesame Street felt a lot more urban... like a real inner city street, something a lot of kids could relate to.

That said, a lot of what Sesame Street does is still really great. I don't want my Elmo-hating to rub off on my warm fuzzies for the rest of the show. Happy birthday, Sesame Street! I still want to know how to get to you! I will just fast-forward through Elmo-time toddler-hour.

I initially wanted to write sesame street is My Life, but then I felt kinda sad - but then I got real happy! sesame street means a lot to me, and I think with good reason. I bought the "sesame street: old school" dvds so that I can show my children the original magic some day, because shit has gone downhill. bert's gone due to his and ernie's alleged homosexual relationship, oscar's been phased out because he's too mean (and teaching children how to deal with bullies/grouches is a bad thing?), cookie monster is now the vegetable monster. so this anniversary is somewhat bittersweet, but I'm still proud to call sesame street my one true love.

Anyone remember that time Lindsay confused Cookie Monster and called him Ernie? I believe "shit for brains" was the term somebody leveled against her. That one hurt her feelings too because I remember she mentioned it in her final post.

Aw Gabe, you're a 45 year old man, where's the retro Sesame Street? Since I am almost 40, and watched this show religiously when I was little (it was on TWICE a day!) I would like to share some of my favorite (retro) Sesame moments:

Pinball Countdown
Baker 10
Ladybug Picnic
Alligator King
20 Pickle Pie
Gorilla Employment Agency
Grover & the Picture Menu
Fat Cat Sat Hat
Ma Nah Ma Na

I remember Sesame Street as being somewhat... psychedelic and freeform in the seventies... a lot of those animated sequences were pretty trippy.

Hey did everyone finally end up seeing Snuffy? I think they did right? Big Bird had a big I toldya so moment and that's when it ended (personally for me.)

There's actually a good reason why Snuffy is no longer Big Bird's imaginary friend. They thought it was important that Big Bird finally be believed by everyone else because, and this is the sad part, they wanted to make sure kids who've been abused feel like people will believe them if they try to get help.
