We Get It Eminem, You're Awful Now

thumbnail icon: We Get It Eminem, You're Awful Now

Look, Eminem has earned his place in history. Whatever you think of his hate-filled, Weird Al Yankovicly comic rhymes, the fact is that he has made white rappers legitimate* in a way that Snow failed to, despite the hard work that Asher Roth is doing to set white rap back twenty years. And I think we all agree that "Lose Yourself" is a great crossover track with both pop and hip hop appeal, and none of the aggressive misogyny and homophobia that has plagued Eminem's career (and hip hop in general). But he's never really recovered from 8 Mile. Once they make a movie about your life (basically) in which you also star, and win an Oscar for the soundtrack, what's left? You retreat to your Clinton Oakland Township mansion and get spotted shopping at the local Farmer Jack's and you get fat and lazy and complacent, to the point where when you finally do make your "triumphant" return everyone just wonders why you seem so fat and lazy and complacent, even if you hired a personal trainer to make sure you don't look that way anymore. But whatever, do what you got to do. You've earned it. Eat your own heart out, literally.

But this new strain of super-horror in your music videos has got 2 stop.

What? Was there a discount on The Number 23 DVDs at Sam's Club or something? Between this and his Blair Witch Hostel video from last weekend, it's becoming really clear what he did during his time off (Hint: WE'RE GONNA NEED A BIGGER NETFLIX QUEUE.)

Is Eminem even in this video? At least T-Pain had the courtesy to send an animated GIF when he couldn't make it. Jerk**.

*Making white rappers legitimate is only important insofar as it legitimizes rap itself in a way that hadn't been accomplished before. We can argue all day about whether or not the necessity of a white rapper to break cultural barriers for a musical genre that was and is dominated by blacks is in itself is a sad example of the way in which racism continues to infect our culture, but the fact remains that rap is in a better place than it was before Eminem started.

**Eminem is a jerk for not appearing in his own video. Not for writing songs about murdering his ex-wife and hating his mother to death.

people tend to forget that. and it seems that em is doing all he can to ensure that people forget that.

What in the hell are you guys talking about. Rap is in a better place now? Thanks to Eminem? What are you guys smoking WMD's?

! maybe not a better place per se, but he definitely changed the game. legitimately. regardless if you think he's annoying or brilliant, his brashness was unprecedented. you can't deny that. he had bigger balls than anyone else out there.
that reason alone is why i said that.

I'll give you that he was a factor that changed the "game" but to say that it's better now? How is this better? Lil Wayne asking me whats a goon to a goblin?

As for brashness? What have you never listened to NWA?! Stop the insanity.

I'd like for you to expand on what you mean by "rap is a better place than it was before Eminem started" because I don't know what that means. Is it a better place? Remember, Em found and flaunted 50 Cent for a while and Asher Roth basically copped his whole flow from Em.

Quit slagging Weird Al, Gabe! He's one of the few people who ever actually pulled off fake rap. Excuse me, but this shit is golden.

I wish you guys could have seen my face as I watched the first :30 of this video (didn't make it past that.)

In fact, I would enjoy a montage of all of your faces as you watched this video. I'm sure it would be the same expression, just with different hairstyles.

I think we can safely say, Gabe, that in his time off Eminem has delved into the black arts of Satanic worship. This is the only thing which explains his terrifying new music which sinks into your fuckin head. Somebody's makin deals with the Devil, ya'll, and we've gotta put a stop to it.

Have you ever even MET a conservative person? Or a religious one for that matter? Because you're kind of like a bad impersonation by someone who read The Crucible once and figured that's how religious people are. Only saying "y'all" every once in a while because y'all = ignorance with you.

I read in one of the "Pre-Comeback, Where is Eminem?" articles from about a year ago that he pretty much never left his home and just had Taco Bell and Outback Steakhouse delivered daily. So there's that.

I think we should give Eminem a break; I'm sure he just wants to be on the movie poster for "Inglorious Basterds 2: Edge of Reason"
Ok, so maybe Snow and MC 900 ft Jesus failed to legitimize white rap, but what about the Beastie Boys? Did the damage done by Vanilla Ice and Bubba Sparxxx completely undo their progress?

in a better place? WTF? maybe the idea of hiphop is a better place, but I think it's universally accepted that this decade has had the worst output so far in the history of the genre. io'd rather listen to the worst of even '90s radio rao over the best of whatever they call rap on the radio today.

apparently none of you heard: hip hop is dead.

The music for this song has been used countless times. Off the top of my head I can tell you without a doubt that M.O.P. and Scarface have used it. When are rappers going to make new "beats"?

It's not better NOW but that's nothing to do with Eminem.

Eminem was the only rapper keeping it alive. Well, you had Nas but he got boring for a while.

Em is the best lyricist to grace the mic, three classics in a row and now Relapse. Get real, no one comes close.

White America, Till I Collapse, Square Dance, Stan, The Way I Am, No Apologies

Untouchable MC.
