Voices That Care, For Crying Out Loud

thumbnail icon: Voices That Care, For Crying Out Loud

Can we make a rule that says that every single year at the same time (summer is probably best), all of the people who are currently "hot," no matter how unrelated their fame is, have to get together in the same room and sing a cheesy song together for the enjoyment of The People Of The Future? Because these things are SO FUN. "Voices That Care" was a single released in 1991 and intended to bolster the morale of the Desert Storm troops. I owned it. I also taped the making-of special that aired on FOX, and saved the tape, and watched the tape, because I loved Fred Savage, Will Smith, and Alyssa Milano. "Voices That Care," the video: whether it's a trip down memory lane or a look at what was going on while you were being potty trained, it's so much fun:

Hey, we have troops in the Persian Gulf now! Why don't they get our current celebrities to do a cover? Robert Pattinson would probably do it! But the only five people they would probably ask back for another round would be Will Smith, Meryl Streep, Sally Field, Whoopi Goldberg, and (star of the upcoming NBC comedy Community) Chevy Chase. It's weird because most of them are old! (Via Everything Is Terrible.)

And because it's sort of on-topic, this morning The Today Show showed a short clip of a soldier surprising his 10-year-old daughter by returning from Iraq. It's wonderful:

My God, I'm glad if that's what people looked like while I was potty-training, I'm glad I don't remember it at all.
But aww that second video.

Im not one to defend the awful hair on display from 1991, but Im not really sure this is an era from which to cast stones.

At least the 80s only really had a couple infamous hairstyles to answer for.

Fred Savage is still relevant! He's been directing episodes of Party Down!

I know, I know! But he's chosen to be out of the spotlight so he probably wouldn't be in the 2009 video. Fred Savage will always be relevant, though.

(Kinda/Sorta) Wayne Gretzky approved! If we start making cheesy videos again, they should have to be endorsed by a random sports star who'll be irrelevant in 10 years or so. This year's player? Kobe Bryant.

Dudley Moore! Love that guy. 91 was a crazy time, considering they gave Bolton the chorus. Also, was that the dude from Warrent?

Yes, that was Janie Lane from Warrant doing the Caruso sunglasses move. Also ,who let Mike Tyson stand next to Debbie Gibson? Seems like some questionable judgement right there.

Thought 1: @1:59. I had no idea david caruso used to be a long-haired rocker.

Thought 2: My guess is that there were some heavy savage/milano make out sessions during the breaks.

Thought 3: The Boz!!!

I only agree about this rule if Peter Cetera can be included in every single new video. And now, I'm going to go watch Karate Kid 2.

Let's ask Canadian Wayne Gretzky what he thinks of the Patriotic song we've written for our American troops. Genius.

They definitely should start doing these again for the future laffs, but in the meantime they are actually kind of nice for soldier's kids. I am the expert on this because if you travel back to 1991 and replace the classroom with an army hotel I am that little girl.

I never thought I'd see a video like the one of the little girl in the classroom here on Videogum. Maybe my all-time favorite thing I've seen here on V-gum, especially because it lives in a post about Voices That Care. I remember buying the cassingle b/c Cindy Crawford "sang" on it.

Sally Field? Michelle Pfeiffer? Meryl Streep?? Chevy Chase?! That crew, combined with Little Richard, Michael Bolton, Jani Lane, and the Nelson boys? The only misssing factor was Sebastian Bach, or quite possibly the chick from C & C Music Factory.

Whomever managed to put that one together deserves the title of Reigning God Of The Universe. We will never, ever see stuff like that again. God, I miss the nineties.

aww to the second video and all, but the more i think about it, the more i feel that "my dad just came home from iraq" isn't going to prevent other kids teasing her about crying in class.
kids are assholes when it comes to middle eastern oil wars.

Why don't they make these sorts of things anymore? I theorize that The Simpsons killed them with "Sending Our Love Down the Well" way back when the Simpsons mattered. You kids today might not believe me, but The Simpsons used to be a funny, highly relevant and scathing parody of American life.

OMG I dont think I've heard this song SINCE 1991...I just had a terrifying 8th grade "Top Five at 9:00 while doing my homework" flashback. Thanks for sharing...I might have to listen to it a few more times...

Laugh and downvote me all you want, but as cheesy as that is, as someone with close family ties* to the military, I was honestly touched a little and teared up at this. Until the Fresh Prince showed up. Then it was pure LOLz. But yeah, I can appreciate what they were doing. I didn't watch the second video because I'd like to be functional for the rest of the day.

*I finally used "family ties" in a sentence! Take that, bucket list!

Personally, I think it's kind of horrible that they aired this little girl's reaction to her father coming home. Talk about production to jerk tears out of the public. Let her see her father by herself.
