This Ain't Your Grandpa's Weird Al Yankovic (Actually, This May Be Your Grandpa's Weird Al Yankovic)

His new song (via LaughingSquid) is actually kind of depressing. And dude isn't even pardoying anything!

Obviously, in the land of the 14-year-old, Weird Al Yankovic is king. But how many of our tiny babies are going to relate to a song about a failed actor spending his days giving Disneyland tours of a plastic safari as his dreams flow away on the milky currents of a fake Amazon river? Do they have the cultural frame of reference to make sense of Annie Liebowitz, 12 Angry Men, Uta Hagen, and Speed the Plow namedrops? More importantly, who cares? The 14-year-olds can take care of themselves. And there should be an emergency number by the phone in the event that they can't.

I want to say one word to the 14-year-olds. Just one word: iPlastics!

Weird Al likes Fountains of Wayne.

I was going to say They Might Be Giants, but I think you're closer. I wouldn't be surprised if Adam Schlesinger produced or co-wrote this.

I sort of like it, but that's because I'm a nerdy man-child. And I don't care who knows it! (Ok I care a little. Thank you anonymous commenting!)

Well 30 years (seriously!) of parodies and accordion will probably make a guy want to branch out.

I think this is actually one of his best songs in recent years, super catchy and very reminiscent of his stuff from the late 80s-early 90s. For those saying it's depressing,"dark," or esoteric, he's basically been doing the same thing for his entire career. Just like he has always been doing non-parody songs all along. He's a musician first and foremost and a satirist secondly, anybody who says otherwise doesn't know his work outside of the music videos that got MTV airplay.

For more examples of his original songs that are great, check out: Happy Birthday, I'll Be Mellow When I'm Dead, Mr. Frump in the Iron Lung, Frank's 2000" TV, Talk Soup, Airline Amy, Melanie, Stuck in the Closet with Vanna White, Those Were the Good Old Days, The Night Santa Went Crazy, My Baby's in Love with Eddie Vedder and I could go on and on(I already have).

For a song about the death of hope, it's quite peppy!

It's not, but it sounds strangely like a parody of Casiotone.

Useless Trivia:
The video was animated by Divya Srinivasan who also did the album art for Sufjan Stevens' Illinois.

I'm gaining new respect for Weird Al, weird! It is a very :( song but he's really good at putting words together. Tight song writing, huh? I guess it took an original for me to notice he can do more than just slightly change somebody else's words. Good for you Al, cheer up please.

He's always been great at putting words together. Fitting entirely new themes into complex existing rhythms and metrics is challenging. Try it out sometime. In elementary school I turned Patrick Swayze's "She's Like the Wind" into a song about farting. That was tough, and the work was mostly already done for me. Of course, I was nine. Still, I was probably more clever then than I am now. Why are we talking about my childhood?

Seems pretty apparent to me that this is partly inspired by Weezer's "Pork and Beans." The guitar part, anyways.
