This Is Your Dad's Music Video

thumbnail icon: This Is Your Dad's Music Video

Thanks to this week's Ultimate Tipping Champion, Denise, for this incredible music video of a High School Science teacher (my guess) singing his original soft metal masterpiece, "Without You," about loneliness, featuring beaches, bogs, clouds, and some sort of local model who probably doesn't know this is on the internet. This is a drop everything and watch now kind of situation. You will be hearing about this guy:

I would like that to be my ringtone. Turns out Pensacola's (I knew it!) Mark Gormley has been making these since 2006 with almost no views. Like this one with animation, about birds:

Or this one, about...9/11?:

Mark Gormley for Most Famous YouTube Star of January, 2009, please.

That is exactly what I thought. I wonder if they ever saw this guy.
I think my favorite parts are when he changes legs to put weight on.

The Life of the Mind

I think anything without a sense of irony in this day and age is so rare that when something like this pops up that is so ridiculous and yet does not appear to have a trace of irony to it, we don't really even know what to do with it.

I've seen too many things like this done ironically that now I'm completely beside myself. I'm flummoxed, bewildered, and slightly frightened.

Brilliant - but even better than just this - I couldn't help but be drawn in by the girl at the end telling me to visit http://www.theunchartedzone.com/ and I'm so glad I did. It looks like there's some other favorite artists that Katt likes to play, who also make great use of the local model wandering around town while being the artists' muse.

One of the other videos says that he recorded his music in the 1970s but is only now making videos for them. Since it's Katz production, I can assume Mark had some extra cash hanging around to spend getting videos made by the creepy looking dude at the beginning of the video. Good for him and his Rush/Moody Blues/Jethro Tull-ish music.

At 3:41, they even remade the monolith site from '2001: A Space Odyssey'.

Guys, but seriously, have you actually LISTENED to "Little Wings"? It's, like actually, pretty sweet. I'm getting white rabbit chills and am scrounging my drug shoebox for acid. I think I only get distracted if I look at him floating though space; not the seagulls.

Yeah, I'm going to go out on a limb (npi) and say 'Little Wings' is actually good in an acoustic Nuggets II kind of way.
I love how he awkwardly changes positions at the microphone.

There are few things better than the nerdy genius prolifically churning out songs in obscurity, led by the muse of a familiar heavy metal band but sending it through a fun house crazy prism. This was the appeal of Robert Pollard and Guided by Voices (trying and trying to make another "Don't Fear the Reaper") and it's the appeal of Mark Gormley, whose goal in "Without You" is late-70s-era Iron Maiden. Rock on! And props to a guy who really knows how to rock the kickstand pose!

At the very least it can be said that Gormley's "Without You" is better than Van Halen's "Without You," since one doesn't have the urge to punch him out like they do Gary Cherone.

Robert Pollard - also a former teacher, as I assume Gormley is. Is that fact or are we just assuming he's a teacher? But I think that's where the similarities end. Gormley is awesome in an amusing, almost sad way. Pollard is simply awesome. Maybe if Gormley drank more...
