Stephen Colbert Clashes Egos With Paul McCartney

thumbnail icon: Stephen Colbert Clashes Egos With Paul McCartney

Last night, Stephen Colbert gave Sir Paul McCartney the same treatment he gives our nation's unwitting congresspeople in a new, probably short-lived segment called "Better Know A Beatle." McCartney, or "The Fightin' Walrus," seemed legitimately befuddled by Stephen's character, who, after finding out that Sir Paul had never seen his show, claimed to have never heard any Beatle's songs. And then Paul accused the Dalai Lama of potential cannibalism, and then they sang together, proving Stephen Colbert can pretty much get away with anything:

"Then McCartney started the band Wings, best known for their song "Stop Requesting 'Strawberry Fields' That Was John." If "Better Know A Beatle" is a real series, I'm already feeling sorry for Ringo Starr.

Stephen Colbert is hit or miss with me, but this was HIT. Everything that came out of his mouth was a golden nugget of delight.

I thought his interview with the subject of Man on Wire was genius, and then he had to go and top it with this. He truly does get away with everything and it's all for the benefit of advancing comedy as an art form.

I think there's a distinct possibility that McCartney wasn't miffed by Colbert, was actually out-straightfacing him.

I'm pretty sure Paul and Stephen talked before the interview. So I'm sure Paul knew what was coming. Plus I think Paul has a good sense of humour.

I was there, in the audience. bummed out that paul wasn't there in person though. it was the only reason i ran out of my apartment to get to the studio for the second time.

colbert told the audience after the show: "there's only a few celebrities that can make my heart skip a beat. i sang with THE paul mccartney! somebody slap me"

paul definately knew colbert was just a character because before every interview he tells his guests: "i'm going to be an idiot, a different person, so you just need to put me in my place" something like that
