Jewel Shows Us How Namedropping Is Done

thumbnail icon: Jewel Shows Us How Namedropping Is Done

Normally, none of us would watch an AOL interview with Jewel, right? I mean, whatever, Jewel, be Jewel, write songs, don't be homeless, live and let live. But intrigued by a post on ONTD calling Ms. Kilcher a namedropper, I watched this interview, and wow, just wow. The names just keep falling to the floor. Summary: "Bob Dylan was all 'be yourself' and then Neil Young goes 'you're the best, Jewel' and then Merle Haggard agreed, so I went ahead and did it.":

To be fair, the question was "What's the best advice you've received from your peers?" Though those aren't her peers. I just kept waiting for the part where she said Johnny Cash was the one who told her not to fix her teeth, but that must have ended up on the cutting room floor.

And then Mozart was all "Oh Jewel, you're awesome, I wish I was as talented as you are when I was your age." and then the guy who invented the guitar back in the middle ages was like "I invented the guitar ESPECIALLY for you, so that everyone could hear you're amazing voice"....and so then I called God up and he was like......

And Oog, you know Oog, right? He invented music way back in caveman days, like 4,000 years ago. Oog said I was the best he ever heard. Like, I have such a great voice, and I'm so unique, and that's why he invented music, because he wanted to hear someone like me sing it.

On one hand I actually think she sounds quite sweet, I mean I'd be bragging too if Bob Dylan and Neil Young were my pals, but on the other hand I'm reminded of that terrible dance album she did that she promoted by posing in the lads' mags at the time in desperation for another pop hit, so obviously she didn't take any of the advice they gave her at all. And of course now she's gone country, which it seems is what flagging pop acts do these days in order to bump up their sales.

Ok, she was not famous and writing bad songs and yet all these solid musicians knew and talked to her personally? Also, if you don't want to end up in your car again maybe you want to get a job? I'm all for artistic success but some of us know yodeling love songs, even though it's 'you', won't always pay for the blonde hair dye. What pisses me off most about Jewel is that she got so many props for not fixing her tooth, like she was the ugliest beast that ever defied industry standards but still managed to lapdance her way into a Schick commercial.
