Will Someone Please Tell Hollywood That Not Everything Has To Be Jokerized?

thumbnail icon: Will Someone Please Tell Hollywood That Not Everything Has To Be Jokerized?

The Dark Knight was great, there's no confusion there. But we have now officially entered the phase where every movie tries to get a little taste of that dark magic. Now, it's one thing for other superhero movies to take on a more sinister, brooding tone. If anything, that's a sea change that's coming too late. Who wouldn't have liked to see a Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer with a little more grit and gravitas? Although, with that movie the only way to make it dark enough as to be watchable would be to literally black out the whole screen for the entirety of the movie. BUT ANYWAY. The superhero franchises and other big budget summer blockbusters could all use some smartening up and some roughening of the edges.

But really, The International? It's an action movie about a bank. RELAX. Besides, the appropriation of what made The Dark Knight such a success means treating your audience with respect, as if they were adults who can understand things sometimes. Not LITERALLY SPRAYPAINTING on your poster. I'm surprised they didn't just go with "Why So Serious?" as their tagline. "Why So Serious, Spooky Bank?" Perfect. Opening night. IMAX.

this movie looks completely absurd.
not fun absurd, but frustrating absurd.

This may be poorly received, but whatever I'm regularly poorly received... I just saw The Constant Gardener (lousy) last night and this looks like a lame man's The Constant Gardener.

"You think of pharmaceutical companies as the people who save your life by making drugs... But what if they were evil!?!? If that idea scares you, don't even THINK of checking out the International... It's about a BANK that's evil! InTheatersFriday"

The comparison seems reasonable... They both star well-received british leading men, sexy leading ladies with accents... Both involve mammoth institutions that sort of supersede governments... They both have terrible names...

This is correct, but it should be noted that Watchmen is the exception to the rule. People should be spraypainting "WHO WATCHES THE WATCHMEN?" all over the fucking place.

Go out and do that right now. Illegally graffiti all over some stuff, and then take a picture and see if Warner Bros. will send you some money.

Ooh, why AREN'T people going low rent viral with Watchmen right around the corner... If you DO spray paint the warning, make sure you leave it incomplete. It never appears whole in the graphic novel! I'm a geek!
