Thursday Night TV Open Thread

Who is in charge of the math over in the TV Scheduling Department? Because this is getting ridiculous. Why is most of the week an empty wasteland with almost no laffs at all, and then Thursday night it's a chore to get through all the great shows? Hasn't TV ever heard of pacing itself? C'mon TV! And as if TV hadn't already overloaded Thursday nights with 18 hours of good shows, now FX is adding The League? Enough! Uncle, or whatever! Why do you hate all the other days of the week so much?

Speaking of The League, it's pretty good! Obviously, we all have good will towards this show (right? SAY YOU HAVE GOOD WILL TOWARDS THIS SHOW) because it has Nick Kroll and Paul Scheer in it, and we like them (SAY THAT YOU LIKE THEM), even if some of us were a little worried because of how much we don't care about fantasy football at all, since some of us do not even care about reality football. And there are definitely a lot of fantasy football jokes in this show about which I lack the ability to even form an opinion, but there are lots of other jokes, too, and those jokes were funny. So, you know, that is good.

And then, of course, there is the whole Jeff Dunham was on 30 Rock thing.

It was weird! They were kind of making fun of him? For being awful and appealing to idiots? And he got tackled. But then also kind of making fun of themselves, namely 30 Rock's off-putting pride in its own cleverness and detachment from what America actually wants. Accurate! Whatever, I'm just glad that this isn't forever. For a second I really thought Jack was going to hire Jeff Dunham to be the new actor on the show for a few episodes or something. Although I suppose it would have been funny when one of the puppets made one of his racist "jokes" to Tracy Jordan. I am sure that would have gone very well!

Sincerely,
Peppy Bismilk.

Abed's monologue at the end reminded me of The Advantures of Sonic And Tails.

"Lurking, running, jumping, hurdling, sleeping. No, I don't sleep. You sleep."

It might just be because it is the shiny new toy in the pile, but I am really into Community. Even if it wasn't the first to come up on the DVR queue, I think I would watch it first. It just seems to get stronger by the week. And Parks and Rec was great last night as well. I'm no tv buff, but I can't really think of another show that has made such a leap in its second season. Of course, both of those shows are at least five deep when it comes to talent, so they're not exactly underdogs.

Oh, The League! My Nick Kroll fandom may have clouded my judgement, but I thought it was pretty funny. Not the best premier of all time or anything like that, but it was just dirty enough (which was pretty dirty, actually), plenty funny, has a great cast, and a sharp script.
And an Ed Hardy zinger... which is, of course, always hilarious.

What I wonder, though, is if when writers come up with stuff about people being totally creepy and ambiguous with kids, do they ever rethink it when they realize they have to get actual child actors to participate in these scenes. Because Nick Kroll (to whom my heart belongs) was a complete pedobear in The League's series premier.

Between Community, 30 Rock, and It's Always Sunny, I think last night was the best Thursday TV night yet this year.

Favorite lines:
"I saw your Dad's ghost again."
"I met JJ Abrams once, and I don't know what this means, but he said the island is just Hurley's dream."
"His mania is not confined to the ring."
Anything Chevy Chase said.

I enjoy every time a Parcell appears "in cameo". There was the completely random (and relatively stupid) do the microwave mini-flashback a couple of episodes ago that had him over-enthusiastically participating, which made me chuckle. Then between his bowl haircut slash awesome mustache persona and his emotional female, I was on the floor. Those little moments always require the use of the hook button.

You guys. A few weeks ago I was like, "Community still needs to prove itself! I see it's potential, but I need it to turn up the volume or it will be out! Auf wiedersehen!"

And it did! Last night was like the moment you look into the eyes of that chick you're banging and think, "Maybe I want to introduce her to my mom." It was love people. I'm not ready to marry it, yet, but I think it can at least have a drawer!

I just couldn't get past how much I hate the entire concept of The League. Haha, these grown men are childish and hate the confinement forced upon them by their families and their wives who don't, nay can't, understand their whimsical and brotherly need to enjoy themselves via a sports-related manly group activity. Except for the one wife who actually understands this sport better than her husband, which of course humiliates and emasculates him while nominally contradicting the women-don't-get-sports stereotype. Haha!

That said, Nick Kroll and (especially) Paul Scheer are awesome, and I will probably continue to watch to see them.

I agree with Rex. I honestly am not that familiar with the comics whose efforts we're supposed to be supporting here. I trust Gabe on that, so maybe I'll tune in next week. But so far, I have been totally turned off by the concept and advertisements. Every single joke in the ads was just like "Oh isn't it totally absurd and hilarious how much these guys LOVE fantasy football?" No, it's not.

I know what Gabe means, last night was three straight hours of hilarious television. That might be a little too much! I mean, by the time I got to The League I was actually kind of exhausted from all the laughing. On the other hand, I have six new shows to watch every Thursday now, so it's basically Christmas every week.

The League was awesome. Although I do love Kroll and Scheer I was most excited to see Jon Lajoie (taco). I think the whole song he did at the kid's birthday was the most hilarious thing to happen last night.

Also, I've been playing fantasy football since I was 12 and the jokes they made that were relevant to football didn't seem like they would alienate any viewers due to a lack of football knowledge. It just seemed like when they would make a football joke then they would explain it afterwards, like the Keyshawn Johnson joke.

But anyways, last night definitely got my roflcopter off the ground.

I have resisted watching anything that Jeff Dunham does because, obviously, life is about choices and I choose no puppets. However, I am a 30 Rock fan, so I saw him on last night's episode. Holy shit, Community and 30 Rock were good last night. "How did you find the time to eat a diaper you found on the beach?" I laughed so hard, my children will probably be born laughing. But It's Always Sunny sort of let down. Artemis is never not funny when you put her in a scene but the whole America vs. the Taliban wrestling thing and the thing with the N-word, I dunno, I like to LAFF hard and very vigorously, but it made me kind of uncomfortable. By the time they got to the actual wrestling scene it just felt like they were just doing anything to get a laugh. It wasn't half as funny as the wrestling scene in Hundred Dollar Baby. Then again, I'm still studying to get my Masters in It's Always Sunny so what do I know? "Oh, you got kids, man?"
"Nahhh...not anymore." The best.
