Meet Clare The Racist Australian Internet Celebrity

thumbnail icon: Meet Clare The Racist Australian Internet Celebrity

There was a shooting at a nightclub in Sydney on Sunday, and the local news interviewed bystanders. And that was how Australia, and now the world, was introduced to Clare, a young lady who witnessed the non-fatal shooting and stepped up to tell the story to the cameras in the most matter-of-factly racist way she possibly could. ("Wog" is considered a slur for people of color, or slang for the flu, or an acronym for "Winter Olympic Games." But Clare probably meant the first one.) "I will call on my fully sick boys, eh!":

So now Clare is an overnight internet celebrity. For real: she has a publicist, a Facebook fan group, and people are selling tshirts printed with Clare-isms. She's like Australia's Miss South Carolina! (Thanks for the tips, Michael and Joseph!)

wtf? where's Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman??? i swear Australia's ratio just went to the shits. one girl is clearly sane, her male friend understandably intoxicated after a night out ...then there's Matter-of-Factly Racist/Wannabe Model girl but, but... there's also a hidden bonus gem interrupting at the end of the video.

"They just shot... I saw the gun (...). It was awesome."

Lindsay, you just stumbled upon a gift that just keeps on giving.

Yeah... I mean, it's not outside the realm of possibility that a bogan chick who had just seen a shooting after coming out of a tattoo parlour (because she didn't have enough regrets that week, obviously) would make a denigrating remark about the colour of a person's skin, she was talking about Greeks or Italians. Also - how have things like 'fully sick' not travelled?????

I think you're thinking of wop, meaning "without papers," insinuating that immigrants from the Mediterranean were in the US illegally. My New York-born mother was called this as a child and was upset until she learned what it stood for. Then she just laughed.

Actually in Australia 'wog' is an inoffensive term for someone from the Mediterranean, it has none of the racist connotations that it would have in the UK or elsewhere, and even here it doesn't mean someone 'of colour' but mediterranean. So a non-story there. Ironic that she's being accused of ignorance.

But we hate dickheads.
If you're an asian dickhead, we hate you because you're a dickhead, not because you're an asian.
But you of course will deny that you're a dickhead, and conclude that we hate asians - and telling others this just confirms that you're a dickhead in the first place.

Just to add another Australian comment - the term "wog" used to be very derogatory however it was reclaimed by the Greeks and Italians. There was a much loved stage play called "Wogs out of Work" in the 80s and a huge movie called "The Wog Boy".

BUT it's still not such a good thing if you're a whitie to use the term "wog" - especially when you're talking about people with guns.

Now's the time for the rest of the world to learn another Australian term: "bogan". It means an uncultured, fairly stupid, lower class person. Bogans like to spend their bogan bonus on plasma TVs.

Now... the other thing about this video... it feels awfully fake.

Aahahahaha I am more amused by the ignorant comments of this post than anything else. I'm an Aussie, and while I think Clare is hilarious, she's not being racist, just politically incorrect. I get called a wog all the time. It's not offensive, the way SHE is saying it is not offensive, just stating of the fact. Sometimes it's intended to be offensive (generally by a non-wog), but most of the time, wogs are proud to be wogs.

Stepping off my stool now.

Can we have a correction please? First of all "wog" is NOT a slur for people of color. Its historically been used to refer to people of Mediterranean ethnicity, though it's also been mistakenly applied to those of Middle Eastern background. Secondly, the term "wog" has already been neutralised in Australia. It might still have loaded connotations in the UK, but not in Australia. It's been reclaimed many times over by Aussies of Italian and Greek descent - there was even a comedy in the 90s here called "The Wog Boy" - and is now commonly used as in a descriptive sense, which is what this woman was doing in the video.

Her usage of "wog" is absolutely not the same as a white American using the word "nigger" or "boy".

Lindsay, since you've already acknowledged the corrections made in the comments, couldn't you also edit the original post - she was not being racist - so it doesn't generate any more ignorant comments. It's bloody funny without the racial stuff... sleeping with other guys cousins, calling da fully sik boys - what's not to love about this clip?

You have taken your definition of Wog from encyclo.CO.UK. The definition of this word varies in different cultural contexts, so that definition is bordering on completely irrelevant. Wog isn't usually an offensive term in Australia - it's affectionate. Lebanese, Greek and Italian people self-identify as wogs. I know other Aussies have already chimed in on this, but it's pretty ridiculous to have non-Australians judging this clip like this crazy bitch is Miss California or something. She's just having a laugh at the expense of the news crew. I don't think she's racist, just making a joke out of a well-known archetype, knowing full well the reporter is hanging on her every word.

Yes, "wog" is a racist term, and yes, Clare is a racist. That's why us Aussies love her. Us white people are getting fed up of being blamed for the behaviour of dysfunctional ethnicities, and young people in particular are hitting back at the moralising finger waggers who
think that they can abolish racism with pious sermons.
Get this, Sydney is being turned into the Chcago of the Pacific because of the behaviour some ethnic groups. The behaviour of the two wogs in Kings X is typical of this behaviour. Racism might decline when some ethnicities learn to behave themselves.

Racism is endemic in Australia, particularly among Anglo Australians, who seem to believe that they have a sort of ownership of the country. These very people fantasise about living in a pre 1950’s Australia, before it was “contaminated by wogs and nips.” These are the same people who washed my mother’s mouth out with soap for speaking “dirty wog language” at school (the only language that she could speak), the very people who want me to accept that the term wog is no longer offensive because they somehow miraculously know how I and my people feel about the word. Racist people also love presenting a distorted version of reality, based primarily on fear and fantasy. Crime in Australia does not occur disproportionately among ethnic minorities in Australia as is often cited by the white supremacist element in the country. The truth is, whist there are still people in Australia who treat ethnic minority groups as scapegoats and second class citizens I refuse to call myself Australian even though I was born in this country.

The term ‘WOG’ is racist and highly derogatory, especially when it comes out of the mouth of an Anglo-Australian. Furthermore, no Anglo-Australian has the right to claim that the term is non-offensive. The term originally was used to degrade Italian and Greek Immigrants. Australians are not very creative, hence the term is now used to degrade people from Mediterranean to the middle Eastern origins. As an Italian Australian, I do not tolerate such language.

Not offensive? Not racist?

Really... thats news to me! All I ask is for her to go into Rockdale and at the top of her lungs shout out "hey wog!" and lets see the response she gets. It's like the N word for African Americans... you better not be white if you say it.

And to those saying its ok to use "wog" because of movies and tv shows like Wog Boy and Acropolis Now etc.... better have a good look as who's writing them- wogs. Like the N word, wogs can use it... but no way in the world a white trash bimbo can use "wog" to describe a person. It's not acceptable, and the only people that find it funny are anglosaxon racists. Seriously- if someone addresses me as "wog", they better be one. And she can state all she likes that it's "not offensive", but really... what right does she have to proclaim that!

I feel like I'm about to tip a capful of household grade antispetic into a huge vat of shit with this post but what the heck.

There are a number of disturbing elements in the Clare Weberlof matter.

Firstly, it is disturbing that after even being in the proximity of a violent crime (regardless of the moral status of the victim ) this persons immediate response is to attempt to use the incident as a means of self-promotion, as a means of gaining some ephemeral narcissistic supply. This alone justifies her condemnation and rebuke, but it gets worse, unfortunately.

Secondly, the term "wog" was historically used to describe those immigrants from Southern Europe (namely Southern Italy and Southern Greece) who are conspicuously ethnic and characteristically distinct from those of Anglo-Celt and Anglo-Saxon orgin. A "wog" typically has an olive complexion, dark brown or black hair and brown eyes. The term wog thus captures "Otherness" -- the wog is "The Other". Hence Poles, Germans, most Slavs and even Greeks and Italians from the North ( who typically look Anglo or Sacndinavian ) are NOT wogs. Since many from the Middle East fit the wog archetype the term is also used to describe these Australians too. Australians of Continental European heritage that proclaim that they aren't offended by the word "wog" or that think Clare Weberlof is funny most often don't look like wogs, they typically looks like Anglos (and so do their parents) so they have no direct or indirect experience of racism. I am confident in saying that 9 out of 10 "wogs" (i.e. Greek and Italian Australians that have a conscpicuous non-Anglo appearance) find Clare Weberlof's schtick offensive. To those that are offended the Clare Weberloff incident just confirms that Austtralia hasn't really outgrown the White Australia Policy and that a strong undercurrent of racist exists in both lower and middle class Anglo Australia.

Thirdly, its is not up toa WASP bogans like Clare Weberlof to determine which epithets are acceptable to a minority group. Even if Australians of Southern European descent call themeselves and each other "wogs" it doesn't make it permissible for Anglo-Celt and Anglo-Saxon Australian to use the term. Homosexual men calls themselves "fags", Asians call themselves "chinks", lesbians call themsleves "dykes" but that doesn't mean anyone can throw about these epithets.

Fourthly, the victim of the shooting -- Justin Kallu -- is neither of Greek or Italian heritage but he looks like a wog i.e. he has an olive complexion, dark hair and brown eyes. This underscore my second point that the term wog has less to do with origins and more to do with a type of conscpicuous Otherness.

What can we say about Clare Weberlof? Well I think she is idiotic. On her 2UE interview she said she wants to become a special education teacher but I think it would be more appropriate if she were the recipient of special education. There is a vacuity in her expression that I only see in cretins and some animals. When you look at a gorilla's face you get the sense that you are looking at an intelligent animal -- you sense thought. When I look Clare Weberlof in her ACA interview I get a sense of emptiness, like I'm in the presence of a merely sentient creature, an animal that knows it has to eat, screw, shit and sleep -- but that is all. Her eyes are unususually far part, so far apart that I am inclined to believe she experienced some sort of perinatal developmental disturbance -- a common cause that accounts for her cretin level intelligence, and divergent craniofacial developmental course. This would also account for her emorionally shallow ( or perhaps autistic ) response to a violent crime.

a wog in australian terminology is not just italians and greeks... it is any1 with a medeiterrean background. the hilter youth of australia like the case shown above can be found all over... they are usually marked by our very own australian swass sticker, the southern cross, which is tattoed some where on their person.

Speaking for MOST of the youth of Australia, I do not support Clare in her attempt for 15 minutes of fame, but do not believe this is how all Anglo-Australian people act from day to day because of one bogan making a stupid decision. That being said, You would do well in Australia if you could take a joke, and this one has provided many a conversation-starter for us over here. Making fun of her foolishness is great fun when you're bored, AYE! :)
