Videogum: California Edition

Hey, you guys, I just wanted to give you a heads up that I am in Los Angeles, California for a few days to meet with the President of Entertainment. If things go as I expect they will, he'll probably put me in charge of everything. "What do you mean, you don't think Marg Helgenberger is the best actress to play Lois Lane Jr. in the upcoming Dax Shepard Superman: Babies spin-off reboot tent-pole franchise? I've already given it the green light, you're fired. [Pulls Bluetooth earpiece out of ear and throws it in disgust onto the plate with the remains of his cocaine omelet]."

Just kidding. I'm mostly meeting with Southern California's Regional Manager of the Lawnmower Man to talk about the future of making all the phones in the world ring in unison. But that means that posting will be light until Thursday, when it will be back to normal. There will be posting, it will just be light. Sometimes maybe very light?! I don't know. Stay strong! We can still do this! Let's paint, exercise, and be in California for a few days.

Happy Holidays From Videogum, Like For Real You Guys

The holiday season is upon us, and I'm reminded of this sketch from the awesome UK comedy show That Mitchell And Webb Look, "A Heroin Addict's Christmas":

Gabe has gone off to his ice cave thinking place, and I'm headed to my home state of Florida, a fact I only mention because, haha, Florida, right? We've planned some fun year-end stuff to go up here that involve good people, bad people, and cats, so check back.

...And if you just happen to take any video of any trampoline accidents or skateboarding dogs or people thinking they got winning lottery tickets for Christmas but really it was a cruel Spencer's gag gift, send them to us first! Just kidding about the lottery ticket prank. That's just cruel. (But please keep any and all trampolines under 24 hour surveillance.) Happy holidays and be safe, because you guys are The Best.

It's The Girls' Nite, The Girls' Nite Out

thumbnail: It's The Girls' Nite, The Girls' Nite Out

Hey guys, it's Lindsay, the chick half of Videogum. My co-editor Gabe has been kidnapped by Verne Troyer, so it's going to be just me today (plus a new Worst Movie we found in Gabe's personal papers after the kidnapping. The Family Stone, you guys! Finally!), and then some fun end-of-year stuff until after the holidays, when Verne will suddenly have a change of heart and let Gabe go. So here, of course, is a Christian music video about men who dress up in drag to try to get into the Girls' Night Out, which takes place at church and is about praying. That sounds like fun (NOT):

Don't Forget To Eat All The Cake And Drink All The Champagne, You Guys

I am leaving this afternoon to start my holiday celebration early. PEACE OUT. I'd like to say that it's going to be hard to be away from the internet, but no one likes a liar. It is going to be so easy to be away from the internet.

Lindsay will be here for the next couple of days, holding things down, making sure that any BREAKING box cat news is thoroughly reported before she heads off on her own much-needed and hard-earned vacation. And we have some fun end of year stuff already lined up for the next two weeks to help remind you of what a great time 2008 was. Success! Not to mention a special edition Worst Movie of All Time post about The Family Stone, that I will be ghost-posting from the grave on Monday. The point is, you should probably tell your family that you can't make it home this year, because you have so much Videogum to read and forward to all your friends. Remember: Videogum makes a great gift! (Videogum makes a terrible gift.)

In the words of Barack Obama, "this has never been about me, this has always been about you." And as he also said, "ENOUGH!"

See you soon, guys.

In Defense Of Donnie Darko?

thumbnail: In Defense Of Donnie Darko?

Last week, I made the unpopular statement that I think Richard Kelly (Donnie Darko, Southland Tales) is bad at making movies. Obviously, we are all entitled to our opinion, but based on some of the comments received, I am a little less entitled to my opinion than fans of Richard Kelly's work. Actually, let's clarify, I am less entitled to my opinion than fans of Donnie Darko, because clearly no one is arguing in defense of Southland Tales. Now, while I do not understand why it should bother anyone that I am not a fan of this movie, since surely we can find common ground on something else, and if you like it why does it matter that someone else doesn't, not to mention the fact that if it's really as great as you say it is, I will ultimately look like a fool (in the future, when Donnie Darko is named President of All Movies).

But here is the thing: I have not yet heard an argument of what makes Donnie Darko a good movie.

Videogum.com: Everything You Like To Watch Except Porn

thumbnail: Videogum.com: Everything You Like To Watch Except Porn

Welcome. This is not a music blog.

If you've been reading Stereogum since the beginning -- January 2002, when it lived on LiveJournal (!) -- you know that I have a passion for pop culture beyond indie rock. During its first few years, Stereogum featured all sorts of entertainment coverage, then eventually narrowed its focus exclusively to music. The site has expanded since then: we've launched successful live events and original music compilations. We even made t-shirts. But this is our biggest endeavor yet. A sister blog devoted to visual entertainment -- TV, movies, Web shorts, games -- has long been part of the 'Gum plan. I registered Videogum.com a little over two years ago. Now, finally, we've got something to show you.
