Norm MacDonald's Last Appearance On Late Night With Conan O'Brien Is An Instant Classic

thumbnail icon: Norm MacDonald's Last Appearance On Late Night With Conan O'Brien Is An Instant Classic

If you missed Norm MacDonald's final appearance on Conan before the big move last night, it was a classic example of why Norm is Conan's most memorable guest. When Norm shows up, he's less like a celebrity interviewee and more like half of a Conan/MacDonald comedy team in which Norm plays a person high on magic mushrooms to Conan's nervous straight man. In the span of less than ten minutes, Norm managed to mercilessly tease Conan for being "outfoxed again" by Jay Leno ("Your agent's like...remember that discussion we had where you said "I'll never have to fucking follow Leno again?"), envision his own dire scenario for the next great depression ("If I had money to invest right now you wanna know what I'd invest in? Guys jumping off the top of buildings."), and show clips from the movie he completed six months ago in which he plays Captain Sully, Sully Sulzberg (sic): Airport Pilot. And then he goaded chef Gordon Ramsay into making multiple obscene gestures during a cooking segment. All the video is after the jump.

The interview, in which Norm tries to prepare Conan for the upcoming hobo uprising:

Norm should probably not be allowed to participate in cooking segments with egomaniacal chefs:

And because I'm always looking for an excuse to put up this clip of what I (and many) believe is the greatest late night talk show appearance of all time, here's Norm's infamous Conan appearance with Courtney Thorne-Smith:

Just the best. When Conan moves to LA, Norm should be his sidekick.

Is that too perfect to actually work? A Conan and Norm team? MAybe even a weekly segment with the two. My heart races at the possibilities!

I have never seen a more realistic depiction of three guys trying to cook. One knows what he's doing, one constantly fucks up, and the other ends up drinking while the other two argue.

Norm MacDonald rules. He is one of those guys who could ONLY be a comedian. He was put on this earth to do just what he is doing.

Norm's the funniest guy. Even when's bombing, it still cracks me up. Those movie clips were awesome, great anti-climactic finish.

You know how every once in a while, one of your friends gets just perfectly drunk where he's theoretically coherent, but it's still all insane, and funny, and somehow brilliant? That's Norm all the time. It brings me joy.

When I saw this post on the front page I immediately thought of the interview with Courtney Thorne-Smith. So happy you posted it!

I also believe it is the "greatest late night talk show appearance of all time".

So I checked out Chairman of the Board on Wikipedia, and the entire "publicity" section of the page is devoted to Norm and Courtney Thorne-Smith on Late Night. It's awesome.
