Seth MacFarlane Takes Us To Rape Joke School In the New York Times Sunday Magazine, Seth MacFarlane explained what makes Family Guy funny. To be fair to the boy billionaire, explaining jokes is always awful. But explaining awful jokes is superawful-squared log 10 to the power of awful.

Honestly, and I hate to say it, because Seth is awful, the interviewer actually comes across as the idiot here. *sigh*

There's a surprise.

Oh I get being oblivious to rape is funny (I still don't get it).

No, it totally makes sense. See, when I was a kid, I was listening to the song "Runaway" by Del Shannon, and my father told me that Shannon had committed suicide. I didn't understand such a complex concept as taking one's life based on an overwhelming feeling of despair, so we had a good laugh, got a show on Fox and were quoted by teenagers.

Yes. The rape jokes. There was a time (an embarrassing time) when I actually kind of liked Family Guy. Then I was all like, "What's up with all these rape jokes? Why is there so much violence done to Lois? Why all the hatred spewed at Meg?" Then I was like, "Wait a minute. Seth MacFarlane kind of seems to be a huge misogynist..." I really can't go on and on enough about how much I fucking hate that guy. The rape "jokes" in Family Guy are not subversive and make no attempt to satirize rape culture - the only time it's OK to make a rape joke. Especially if you are a DUDE. Fuck that guy. Seriously OMG.

"Seth MacFarlane explained what makes Family Guy funny."

I wish he'd explain it to me.

Wait, no I don't.

Look, feel how you want about Seth, but this interviewer is ridiculous.

"Why is that funny?" "Are you contemptuous of families?" "You don't seem that interested in expressive color."

OOH! She's trying to stir the Controversy Crockpot! What a dumbass.

MY favorite question was the one that went "Do you think you're better than this one guy? Because I actually think that one guy is better than you. Respond, please."

Come on man, don't make me feel BAD for this poophead!

Do I ever say, “Wilma, I’m home?” Maybe I’ll shout it out during sex, but that’s about it."

Seth MacFarlane is a real chucklefest.

I thought that was mildly amusing answer, mainly because the question was so terrible. What was he supposed to answer? I'm also surprised so many people here dislike Family Guy because its jokes involve "taboo" subjects, I always assumed it was the poor quality of the jokes that was the problem.

I think the interviews horrible questions just highlighted Seth's horribleness and they complimented each other quite well. Ask a stupid question get a stupid answer. Were you to ask Seth MacFarlane an intelligent question however, you would still get a stupid answer.

Not only that, but the interviewer in question probably lied about the questions and answers, if her previous work is any indication. She's an unethical hack.

"Because he’s so oblivious. You’re not laughing at rape; you’re laughing at him being an idiot." Great moment of accidental truth out of MacFarlane's mouth - if you replace the word "him" with the word "me" and replace "rape" with "my jokes." Which are kind of like rape, really.

It should be noted that Deborah Solomon does not represent the entire magazine.
William Safire LOVES rape jokes, whereas Randy Cohen judges rape jokes on a rape-joke-by-rape-joke basis.

You guys are all stupid. The taboo subject and poor joke quality is what makes family guys such a unique and funny show. This is not tuesdays with maury, its a cartoon for adults and stoners, and it does that PERFECTLY

At the FOX Corp. picnic get-together, an employee from the conservative news division had to team up with an employee from the liberal entertainment division in a potato sack rape contest. Their ideological differences between broadcasting and producing an abortion episode is what made it funny.
