Sarah Silverman Is Not A Diva
Sarah Silverman was on Real Time With Bill Maher Friday night, and their funny, revealing conversation has further complicated my already confused Bill-Maher- feelings -- I agree with most or all of his words, but the delivery system for those words annoys the shit out of me. But the other night Bill managed to tamp down the stridency and just let Sarah be Sarah, explaining why she goes to the Playboy Mansion (to see "broken people") and the difference between a diva and a c-word (there is none.)
(I enjoyed the Madoff stuff at the beginning, but the diva stuff starts at 4:55):
"You're not a diva, you're a broken person who's making it impossible to feel sorry for you." I was trying to figure out which celebrity I most hoped saw that, and I've decided it's Tyra Banks.

bill maher is a sad figure. he's like john stewart's tv opposite: putting the political before the comedic. but where stewart can occasionally jump out of the comedic and be compelling in the political arena, bill looks lost when his show turns funny. and he's just not funny. most of his comedy is just bitter old man jabs at things he hates. nice horn tooting there about your awesome career, bill. sarah was too funny. crossing career trajectories should have been that segment's name.

Actually I'd switch out "Jon Stewart" for "Stephen Colbert"--i think Colbert's absurdism reaches further than Stewart's commentary (and thus I like it more).

i disagree on tyra being a diva, though. self-important, yes, but she doesn't come across as a diva to me. she seems nice enough, i think.

I didn't find her funny, and while Bill Maher is something of a hero of mine, I've been disappointed with his shows thus far this year. He seems as though his mind is on other things - and I don't know if this has anything to do with the rumour that's been abounding that he's off to MSNBC to follow Olbermann and Maddow in the 10pm slot. But something's not quite right.
As for Silverman, I couldn't see the point of the interview. In point of fact, not having her on the panel with Andrew Breitbart and Eric Michael Dyson, showed her up to be even more of a diva than those she expostulated about. And, finally, the only thing more offensive than a man saying the word c*nt, is a woman who says it.
I wasn't that familiar with Sarah Silverman before this programme. I'd only seen her doing that schlepp video for the Obama campaign. I had thought she was only in her twenties, but Christ on a bike, she's thirty-nine. The little girl routine is dying a quick death. Her ego's up her ass.
